The Fulbright community is deeply saddened by the passing of author, journalist, playwright, poet, and Fulbright alumnus Alexis Stamatis.

A recipient of the Fulbright Artists & Art Scholars Award in 2004, Alexis participated in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. He remained an engaged member of the Fulbright community, contributing generously to initiatives that fostered international literary dialogue and cultural exchange. Among these was The New Symposium at the House of Literature in Lefkes, Paros, in 2006, an initiative of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in collaboration with Fulbright Greece. Alexis was instrumental in the inaugural symposium, The Commons: What We Hold in Common, the first in a trilogy that brought together an international cohort of writers, artists, poets, scholars, and thinkers to explore ideas of shared human experience across cultures and disciplines.

Throughout his distinguished career, Alexis was one of the most versatile voices in contemporary Greek letters. As a novelist, journalist, playwright, poet, screenwriter, essayist, and creative writing teacher, he created a body of work that transcended genres, enriching Greece's literary and cultural landscape while engaging audiences beyond its borders. His novel American Fugue was selected for the 2007 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) International Literature Award, which supported its translation and publication in the United States. His intellectual generosity, creative spirit, and commitment to dialogue reflected the very values at the heart of the Fulbright Program and will remain an enduring part of the Fulbright community.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, readers, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

EVENT | Celebrating Academic Excellence and International Exchange between Greece and the U.S.

Fulbright Greece hosted its Annual Awards Ceremony at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA), an institution with historic ties to the Fulbright Program dating back to 1948.

This year, 67 Fulbright awards were presented to Greek and U.S. citizens - including faculty members, researchers, PhD candidates, graduate students, artists, and educators - supporting academic exchange, research collaboration, and professional development in Greece and the United States.

Congratulations to the 2026-2027 Fulbright recipients!

Fulbright awards reflect the breadth of the Program, with recipients representing fields across the humanities, social sciences, STEM, and the arts. Their areas of study and research include history, archaeology, economics, agricultural sciences and technology, biomedical technology, computer science, international law, marine ecology, public health, music, and many others.

We welcome the new cohort of 2026-2027 Greek Fulbright grantees as they prepare for their journeys to the United States. At the same time, we celebrate and bid farewell to the 2025-2026 U.S. Fulbright grantees who have completed their programs in Greece. Through their research, teaching, and cultural engagement, they have enriched our communities and further strengthened the enduring connections between Greece and the United States.

Congratulations to all our grantees as they join the global Fulbright network and continue building bridges through knowledge, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

Virtual Pre-Departure Orientation for U.S. Studies (Online Event)

Fulbright Greece - EducationUSA Athens is hosting its annual Virtual Pre-Departure Orientation Session on June 25 between 4:00-6:00 pm local time Athens.

Eligible for this online event are students who have been admitted to U.S. colleges/universities and are about to embark on their studies in the U.S. in 2026-2027.

A variety of topics ranging from student visas, day to day life in the USA as well as academic matters will be discussed. Students can read more about the event and register here
