PERIPTERO/ Learning from Athens? Change of perspective for the economy and society“_an international project between Athens and Kassel in the context of Documenta 14_
in collaboration with Moving School, University of Kassel_

Periptero is characterized as a meeting place where every Greek and tourist can find almost all kinds of things, from ci******es, chocolates, newspapers, and even condoms. It has become the everyday life of Greeks and for this reason most people that work in the periptero are very sociable. They feel the need to be more open to customers and often the same customers find little time to say a few words and to forget about their daily problems. In my neighborhood there is a periptero just outside the station. Beind the counter a young man very friendly with everyone. The whole neighborhood knows him, each morning he turns on loud music and sometimes everybody sings along. He likes talking about girls, football, food and generally gossiping benevolently. Through photo images, sketches and recordings of him and customers my aim would be to show his personality and daily routine behind and around the periptero.

A child because of his natural low hight registers images and experiences that take place in the eye level. The fact that all candies are in the low level of Periptero it is not by chance but deliberately put there so a child can easily look at and reach.
A child's eyes lost in a sea of known and unknown feet and shoes, are trying to decrypt images and shapes of newspapers under the yellow tent and get a candy, a comic or a plastic toy.

A contemporary periptero could be the space where each person can speak out, tell his story through the history of the Greek Periptero itself. In this project we divide this history into five periods each of which creates a different theme subject for the visitor.
Periptero: from ancient greek Peripteros Naos (Temple)
Smoke: the first product that was sold
Newspaper: a significant point on newsprint
Chocolate, candy, gum: connected with joy and childhood
Telephone: communication
All these categories form a stereotypical image of Greece. In this project we will create a digital platform that would encourage the visitor to take part through answering certain questions in a platform of cultural interaction. These messages would then be projected in 5 different screens in the basic periptero but also in several spots around the cities.

Through its long live existence for over 100 years now, periptero is connected with joys and sorrows of the greek people. We create a black and white structure upon which visitors could write with markers about these two opposite sides of life. We aim on the creation of a structure that would have these exact moments being registered permanently through different points of view, special stories, personal testimonies.

The concept of this work is based on the design of an old periptero in a 3D model. It will be unassembled into small pieces inside the packaging. Moreover, along with the package one can find a brochure referring into the history of periptero. The prospective buyer will gain the experience to assemble the old familiar structure of Athens and keep it as a souvenir. Additionally, the material, the color and the texture are carrying the feeling of an old periptero in a small and attractive construction.
