UNITY & LOVE | “For the idea that governs Byzantine (and patristic) thought is that of communion, which presupposes the voluntary meeting of hypostases, or persons, in a relationship of love. In this way a form must also have inner and external movement in order that it might express and reflect this vision of life.  Inwardly, it must not be simple but composite, consisting of smaller units, which come together and exist in harmonious unity within their common rhythm. … These units are distinguished by, and receive their unique existence or hypostasis through line, which, as we have already said, is the mode of existence of color.” ~ George Kordis.

Inside the Panagia Faneromeni church in Vouliagmeni, Greece which Kordis has written. Special focus on the Archangel Gabriel, Egg tempera on wood panel, 69 x 204 cm.

Join us in opening new doors to the art of the icon through learning the Byzantine principles of rhythm as we write the Light…

We welcome you to join to the mailing list (link in bio) and learn our most recent news and upcoming opportunities to study with the mentorship of George Kordis (), as well as upcoming exhibitions.

With Peace before us ~

Καλό μήνα! | May 1st has arrived and we give thanks… 🌿

“A line should stand as a witness to the hope of a state of communion in which all things will exist in unbroken unity, in a relationship of love. It should testify to the structure and qualities of such a unity. Each painter is called upon to find this line in a chaos of choices, and to draw it forth and inscribe it, illuminating not only its existence but also its character.“
~ George Kordis

George Kordis and his team are currently working on a chapel in a monastery outside of Vienna and soon will return to the final painting phase of the Three Hierarchs Church in Budapest. We share some more of the project on our stories.

NEW THINGS: A new Byzantine Foundations I class will take place this Summer with Maria Panou — 8 sessions of one hour each in June and July. We encourage students interested in learning the Byzantine visual system for icons to join and learn to write icons without copying. Classes are held through live Zoom, but also recorded for viewing at your convienience. SEE the www.writingthelight.com website.

SUMMER SCHOOL and NEW YORK residencies are now on waitlists for openings. BYZANTINE WOODCUT with Fotis Varthis is open for students to join on Crete overlapping with our Summer School — August 8 — 13th. See all information on our website. More new things coming soon ~ 🌿

The FALL 2026 Certificate program and SACRED SPACE programs are still taking applications…The curriculum is a hybrid of both online learning paired with individualized in-person residencies. Students immerse in creating icons using the Byzantine system, producing works of beauty to celebrate the living Christian Faith.

Άγιος Γεώργιος, St. George | “...In a world such as this, the world of saints is a spark that keeps the reality of light alive in the darkness. The world of saints stands its ground unassumingly in the chaos of fragmentation, looks around lovingly, opens its tireless arms and embraces it all. It parts its lips and whispers a few meaningful words, an apology, an “I love you.”
~ George Kordis

We celebrate the Feast of St. George with an icon of the Saint, made by in 2022 during an online Open Studio painting class with Writing the Light students. It was both a rare learning experience and a chance to enter into knowing the Saint more deeply through these creative moments (with video clips taken through the computer screen thousands of miles from where Kordis was painting in Athens…). Precious memories to form community together in the creative moment.

New from the recently formed Substack by George Kordis: “The Body as the Logos of Painting”. Join in and read about composition, community and the unity of form (see link in our bio) in THE LIVING LINE, paired with access to a 5-minute video of Kordis drawing a large icon of St. John the Forerunner. 🌿
