🎥 Now Online: Double book presentation on Byzantine Law, by E. Papagianni (University of Athens) and D. Penna (University of Groningen, KU Leuven)

😊 We are very pleased to share the recording of the special presentation of two recent publications on Byzantine Law, by E. Papagianni (University of Athens) and D. Penna (University of Groningen, KU Leuven), which took place on Tuesday May 5th, 2026 at the NIA’s premises.

📌This event was organized in the framework of the NIA Library’s activities.

👥After the brief introductions by the NIA Director Prof. dr. Jan Paul Crielaard, and the NIA Librarian, Ms. Sotiria Nikolou, who moderated the event, the editors E. Papagianni (University of Athens) and D. Penna (University of Groningen, KU Leuven) presented the books:

📖A Companion to Byzantine Law: From the Foundation of Constantinople (330) until the End of the Macedonian Dynasty (1056), Brill 2025, and

📖Byzantine Law. The Roman Law of the Eastern Roman Empire, Cambridge University Press 2026 by the author Daphne Penna (University of Groningen, KU Leuven). The topic of the books is focused on Byzantine Law.

🗣️In her talk Dr. Penna mentioned that she wanted to write a book on Byzantine Law, addressed to all the people wanting to know more about Byzantine Law without having any prior knowledge on this topic. Moreover, Dr. Penna underlined that she took the initiative of writing the book ‘Byzantine Law. The Roman Law of the Eastern Roman Empire’ when she delivered the first lecture in the annual series ‘Byzantine Talks NIA’, which is organized by our Institute, and thus we are very glad to have contributed to this publication!

📍Please note that the online registration of the event includes also the Q&A session.
