A dehumidifier that couldn’t dry the sea… so we pulled it out 💧

Welcome to Peculiar Saturday. This week’s weird find: a dehumidifier, pulled from the port of Patras. Why was it underwater? No idea. But it’s not there anymore.

One less appliance poisoning the sea. One more reason to keep cleaning.

Port coordinator Fanis is sitting by his great achievement: end-of-life fishing gear collected before it ends up in the sea. If not prevented from entering the marine environment, fishing nets will keep trapping marine life long after they are lost. So keeping them out makes a real difference.

Thank you, Fanis, and everyone in Hydra who helps turn risk into recovery.

For Peculiar Saturday this week, Mr. Roberto, our port coordinator in Karystos, pulled a slow cooker out of the sea. 🎣

It weighs 7.5 kg and still has all its wires attached.

Electronic devices like this should not end up in the water because the cables and components can leak dangerous materials as they break down. This one is now safely out. Great catch, Mr.Roberto!

Αυτή τη φορά, αυτό που επέστρεψε στην ακτή ήταν ένα πλυντήριο, ή μάλλον ό,τι είχε απομείνει από αυτό.

Δίπλα του, ο πιστός Port Coordinator μας, κ. Γιώργος Αντωνίου, με ακόμη μία υπενθύμιση ότι η θαλάσσια ρύπανση μπορεί να έχει τις πιο απρόσμενες μορφές.

Από έναν παλαιότερο παράκτιο καθαρισμό στο νησί, αυτή η φωτογραφία μάς θυμίζει ότι κάθε δράση αφήνει πίσω της κάτι περισσότερο από έναν καθαρότερο χώρο, αφήνει συνεργασία, φροντίδα και κοινή ευθύνη για την προστασία των ακτών μας.

Αυτή τη φορά, το παράξενο εύρημα ήταν μισή βάρκα.

Στη φωτογραφία είναι ο Port Coordinator μας, ο Τάκης, με ακόμη μία υπενθύμιση ότι η θαλάσσια ρύπανση μπορεί να έχει πολλές και απρόσμενες μορφές.

Μια καρέκλα βγήκε από τη θάλασσα γεμάτη πεταλίδες, ένα σημάδι του πόσο καιρό μπορεί να παραμένει ένα αντικείμενο στο θαλάσσιο περιβάλλον.

Όμως η ιστορία της δεν τελείωσε εκεί.

Ο Port Coordinator μας, Μαρίνος, στην Χαλκίδα την καθάρισε, την αποκατέστησε και της έδωσε μια δεύτερη ζωή.

Από θαλάσσιο απόρριμμα, έγινε ξανά κάτι χρήσιμο.
