New Temporary Exhibit Unveiled at Local Queens Museum
Never presented outside of Greece, a special collection seen for the first time in over 100 years.
Astoria, Queens, New York: The Heritage Museum of Epirus, in Astoria, NY, is located on 25-14 Broadway, 3rd Floor. The temporary exhibit is open to the public by appointment only starting on March 1 and ending on April 30th 2023. Contact Curator Peter S. Giakoumis for more details.
This new exhibit is dedicated to the 1913 liberation of Epirus and its unification to the Greek Kingdom. The conclusion of the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 changed the history of the Greek narrative and Epirus forever, directly helped by Greek-Americans of the early 1900s.
The Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 heavily impacted many different points of cultural and historical heritage of the Greek and Greek-American collective spirit. The impact and legacy of those that fought for Greece including the Americanized Greeks, and foreign volunteers have seldom been told, and this exhibit helps bring their story and the bigger picture to life.
By using original and one-of-a-kind pieces, as well as museum grade reproductions, the collection on display at the Epirus Museum is the backdrop for the story of sacrifice and glory that took place in Greece during the pivotal time of 1912-1913.
The display itself focuses on three different Military uniforms from the Greek forces of 1912 which fit in perfectly with the theme of the Museum’s folklore costumes.
Along with the uniforms there are original military medals, original photographs, reproduction color posters from the period, and flags, all of which have never been publicly presented in one place.
The items on display are from the private collection of Curator, Peter S. Giakoumis, author of the book: The Forgotten Heroes of the Balkan Wars: Greek Americans and Philhellenes 1912-1913.

Museum Director Vicki Kantlis, “The hard work was worth it. Our new limited time exhibit is a success and was a wonderful opening for hosting the delegates of the Pan Epirotic Association amongst many others.”
Museum Curator Peter S. Giakoumis, “After researching for 7.5 years and completing my book three years ago, I find myself in the unique position of being able to further the historical goals of the Heritage Museum of Epirus in Astoria. The temporary exhibit is the culmination of hard work and I am very proud of that. I hope all our visitors to the exhibit leave with a better understanding and appreciation for the history and dedication of the wonders of learning and cultural awareness that this museum and exhibit represent.”
