A major distinction for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University General Hospital “Attikon”.
The 2nd Department of Clinical Radiology of NKUA at Attikon University Hospital has been officially recognized as an accredited center for the embolization of vascular malformations and aneurysms of the Central Nervous System (Government Gazette Β΄2581/07.05.2026).
This achievement is the result of the close collaboration between the 2nd Department of Clinical Radiology, directed by Professor Nikolaos Kelekis, the 2nd Neurology Department, directed by Professor Georgios Tsivgoulis, and the 2nd Neurosurgery Department, directed by Professor Efstathios Boviatsis.
The recognition establishes Attikon University Hospital as the second specialized center in Attica and the only such center within the 2nd Regional Health Authority of Piraeus and the Aegean, significantly enhancing patient access to advanced neurovascular treatments.
This milestone further demonstrates the commitment of the NKUA School of Medicine to innovation, clinical excellence, and the delivery of highly specialized healthcare services for patients with complex neurological conditions.

The Dean of the NKUA School of Medicine, Professor Nikolaos Arkadopoulos, participated in the annual BrainReGain Conference, “Return, Talent, Impact – Connecting Greece with Global Hellenism”, highlighting the importance of strengthening connections between Greece and the global Greek scientific community.
During his presentation, Professor Arkadopoulos showcased the NKUA School of Medicine as a successful example of transforming brain drain into brain gain. Through a strategy focused on international outreach, meritocracy, and new academic positions, the School has attracted more than 30 distinguished Greek physicians and scientists from leading institutions abroad to join its faculty and university hospitals.
These returning academics bring valuable expertise, international experience, and innovation to education, research, and healthcare in Greece, while also encouraging other members of the Greek diaspora to explore opportunities for collaboration and return.
The NKUA School of Medicine continues to demonstrate how vision, strategy, and excellence can create meaningful impact for the future of higher education, research, and public health in Greece.

Applications for the Medical Degree English Program at the NKUA School of Medicine have officially closed — marking a record year of international interest.
For the 2026–2027 academic year, the program received more than 350 eligible applicants from 57 countries worldwide, highlighting the growing international recognition of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and its School of Medicine.
From North America and Europe to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, students from across the globe chose to apply to one of the oldest and most historic medical schools in Europe.
This remarkable diversity reflects the international character of the program and our commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and global medical education.

International Distinction for Professor of Orthopaedics Vasileios Nikolaou at EFORT 2026
It is with great honor that the Michael Freeman Award 2026 was awarded to Professor of Orthopaedics Vasileios Nikolaou of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens during the 27th Annual Congress of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT), held in Málaga.
The Michael Freeman Award is considered one of the most prestigious scientific distinctions in European Orthopaedics and is presented annually to a scientific contribution distinguished by its quality, innovation, and impact on the advancement of Orthopaedic science.
The awarded study was entitled: “Clinical Outcomes of Alignment Outliers (>5° Residual Varus/Valgus) Following Unrestricted Kinematic Alignment TKA”
and originated from the 2nd Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
The study evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients presenting with residual varus or valgus alignment greater than 5° following total knee arthroplasty performed using unrestricted kinematic alignment principles.
This international distinction represents significant recognition of Professor Vasileios Nikolaou’s academic and research work and highlights the strong international presence of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Proud to see students of the Medical Degree English Program of the NKUA School of Medicine participating in the Hippocratic Week in New York, an international initiative highlighting the global legacy of Hippocratic Medicine and strengthening ties between the Greek and international medical communities.
