GAY ANIMALS?
Some teachers try to convince students that s*xual diversity is 'natural' by pointing to 'homos*xual' animals. The My-ID pedagogy takes another approach. By asking students to study the puzzling dating behaviour of flamingo's, we trigger a discussion about our heteronormative assumptions when trying to understand animal and human s*xual behaviour. Doukas School presents their experiences with the My-ID project. Teachers thought it was relevant to talk about s*xual diversity 'if needs would arise', but also expected negative comments of parents. In the project they experimented with games and role play to reach goals on the emotional level. This worked well, but teachers tended to keep the discussions general rather than on s*xual diversity. This could be a strategies to get more acceptance among students, but it could also represent some avoidance on their part. The description of classroom activities was very useful for them. And.. no comments by parents..

S*x, gender and s*xual orientation: don't confuse them. That is the key message of the popular class activity "The Gender Bread Person".
