# # # GOVERNMENT OF THE GAMBIA RE-AFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO NATIONAL SECURITY AND PUBLIC SAFETY
The government of The Gambia acknowledges ongoing public discourse regarding concerns about crime and public safety across the country. Government takes all matters relating to the security and safety of citizens with the utmost seriousness. It is important, however, that discussions on national security are guided by verified facts and responsible communication that does not risk creating unnecessary fear among the population.
The Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Interior and national security agencies, continues to strengthen the country’s security architecture through sustained investment in police capacity, intelligence coordination, and community policing initiatives. These efforts form part of ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring that law enforcement agencies are better equipped, more responsive, and more closely engaged with the communities they serve. It is also important to note that isolated criminal incidents, while regrettable and treated with seriousness by the authorities, do not amount to a general breakdown of law and order. The security services remain active nationwide, with ongoing investigations, arrests where necessary, and prosecutions being pursued through the established justice system.
The government encourages all citizens and stakeholders to support national cohesion by cooperating with security institutions and avoiding the amplification of fear or the politicisation of crime-related issues. Public safety is most effectively maintained through collective responsibility and constructive engagement.
Furthermore, ongoing security sector reforms continue to prioritise professionalism, accountability, and the welfare of personnel within the security services. These reforms are being implemented in a steady and structured manner, reflecting the government's long-term commitment to ensuring a safe and stable environment for all residents of The Gambia.
The government assures the public that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority, and all necessary measures are being taken to maintain peace, order, and public confidence across the country.

During a Friday Khutbah delivered at a mosque in Gunjur, Imam Abdou K. Touray admonished President Adama Barrow over growing concerns about tribalism in the country, while also responding to a leaked audio allegedly involving Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie.

The Imam strongly condemned tribal politics and warned against any actions or statements capable of dividing Gambians along ethnic lines. Referring to the alleged remarks in the leaked audio, he stressed that no Gambian should be denied opportunities because of tribe, describing such attitudes as dangerous to national peace and unity.

He reminded worshippers that The Gambia has long been a peaceful country where different ethnic groups have lived together harmoniously, intermarried, and coexisted for generations without major tribal divisions.

The Imam further called on leaders and public officials to promote fairness, justice, and national cohesion, warning that unchecked tribal sentiments could threaten the country’s stability. He urged the government to take concerns surrounding tribal discrimination seriously and ensure equal opportunities for all citizens regardless of ethnic background.

The remarks have since sparked discussion among members of the public, with many Gambians renewing calls for unity and condemning all forms of tribalism in national affairs.
