Under the dark skies of Sedona, Arizona, Bell Rock rises in quiet contrast to the vast sweep of the Milky Way overhead. That glowing band of light is our home galaxy—billions of stars packed so densely that, from Earth, they blur into a luminous river across the night. Standing here, the scale is hard to process: ancient red rock below, and above it, a view stretching tens of thousands of light-years into space.

The partial and total solar eclipse photographed in Bloomington, Indiana on April 8, 2024. The thing that blows my mind the most is the fact that the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun. The moon also happens to be 400 times closer to the earth making both entities about the same size in relation to the earth. It’s kind of rediculous if you think about it.

Baily’s beads are brief bursts of light along the moon’s outline that occur seconds before and after totality and are caused by sunlight sneaking through valleys on the moon’s surface. To the left and right are prominences which are a massive explosions of plasma from the sun’s atmosphere. The April 8 total eclipse was photographed in Bloomington, Indiana.
