SAFELY MANAGED SANITATION HACKATHON BY UNICEF StartUp Lab
💻Developers, innovators, builders, and problem-solvers in Northern Ghana—this is a challenge for us to seriously pay attention to.
The StartUp Lab, together with KOICA, MEST Africa, and HOPin Academy, is calling on teams to build tech-enabled solutions for climate-resilient and safely managed sanitation systems in Northern Ghana.
Climate shocks such as floods and droughts are increasingly damaging sanitation systems, contaminating water sources, and affecting the health and safety of vulnerable communities. This challenge goes beyond simply building toilets. It is about designing practical systems that can continue functioning even under difficult climate conditions.
🏆 Winning Perks:
• Up to GHC110,000 in cash prizes
• Fully Sponsored 3-day Bootcamp in Tamale at HOPin Academy
• Mentorship from UNICEF, KOICA, and MEST Africa
• Opportunity to pilot your solution in real-world conditions
đź“… Deadline: May 29, 2026

One important thing: please do not downplay the ideas coming to your mind. Sometimes the strongest solutions are not the most complicated ones, but the most practical, realistic, and adaptable to local conditions.
To help developers and teams better understand the challenge, the HackerBoost team has also published a practical breakdown and analysis of the challenge, highlighting the real problem being addressed, the kinds of solutions that may stand out, important local realities teams should consider, and how to approach the challenge more strategically and realistically.
Read the full breakdown here:

We strongly encourage interested builders to take time to properly understand the challenge before rushing into solution development.
If you need clarity, brainstorming support, team collaboration, or help understanding any part of the challenge, feel free to reach out to the HackerBoost team. We will be happy to support interested builders and teams however we can.
If you are a developer, designer, engineer, innovator, startup founder, or student builder from Northern Ghana or beyond, this is an opportunity for us to build around a real problem with real impact.
Let’s build meaningful solutions from the North.

Looking back, it has been a rewarding path for Hackerboost.
From Tamale to the continent, we have spent the last few years doing one thing consistently well; creating real opportunities for young people to learn, build, and earn.
What started started with intention, has grown through ex*****on.
Our journey through hackathons tells that story clearly.
The HackerBoost ARB-Builder-House Hackathon brought together developers for a one week In-house camp, to build practical solutions within a focused ecosystem, pushing ideas from concept to working prototypes.
Building directly on that experience, we took the format to a larger stage with the ApeChain African Hackathon, where we expanded that vision by connecting talent across borders, encouraging collaboration, and proving that African developers can compete and create at a global standard when given the right environment.
Our Hackathons embrace same hands-on structure; clear briefs, expert mentors on site, and judges focused on feasibility, which produced projects that addressed local challenges in agriculture, finance, health and education. What stood out wasn’t just the code; it was the collaborations that continued long after the closing ceremonies.
But beyond the energy of hackathons, our real impact has been built in the quiet consistency of our bootcamps.
Across Web3/Blockchain, Web Development, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Foundations, we have trained and continue to train participants from zero knowledge to practical competence.
What makes this work is not just the curriculum, but the structure: a hybrid learning model that combines hands-on sessions at our physical hub in Tamale with a structured online learning experience through our dedicated learning management system. This allows us to reach widely, while still maintaining depth, mentorship, and accountability.
With our approach and commitment, we have seen beginners write their first lines of code, and months later contribute to real projects. We have seen learners transition into careers, freelance opportunities, and entrepreneurial paths. That progression is what defines our work.
Now, we are opening the door wider.
If you are a young person looking to build meaningful digital skills; whether in Web3, AI, software development, UI/UX, Cybersecurity and digital foundations, there is a place for you at HackerBoost.
If you are an organization or institution seeking to equip your team with practical, future-ready digital skills, or an institution seeking to empower your students with practical digital skills, we are ready to design and deliver training that fits your needs.
If you are building a business and need solutions such as web platforms, internal systems, or any technology-driven product, we have the capacity to bring those ideas to life.
And importantly, if you are in government or part of an institution that believes in expanding opportunity, we invite you to support our scholarship initiatives for the less privilege. There are many capable young people who simply need access, but have no means. With the right backing, we can reach more underserved communities and change more trajectories.
This is not just about programs. It is about building people, and through them, building solutions.
HackerBoost is just getting started.

We’re excited to share this milestone with our community.
HackerBoost was selected as one of 20 startups for the UNICEF StartUp Lab Cohort 6; a strong validation of our mission to empower young talents with tech skills that can earn them a living, while moving Africa from tech consumption to value creation.
Over the past month, we officially began this 6-month journey with an intensive onboarding experience at MEST Africa
Our first full week session in April focused on user & market research, prototyping and design thinking- and it was both challenging and transformative.
It pushed us to think more critically about the problems we are solving, how we structure value, and how we build solutions that are truly user-centered.
More importantly, it gave us clarity, not just on what we are building at HackerBoost, but how we should be building it for long-term impact.
As a growing organization, experiences like this continue to sharpen our direction. Our focus remains the same: empowering African developers to evolve from learners into builders and contributors within the global tech ecosystem.
We’re grateful to UNICEF StartUp Lab and MEST Africa for the opportunity, the support, and the intentional effort to nurture startups like ours.
Month 1 has set a strong foundation, and we’re looking forward to diving even deeper as we step into Month 2 in May.
We’re just getting started.
