RCEES Wins Energy Institution of the Year as Prof Samuel Gyamfi Secures Two Additional Nominations at the 2025 Ghana Energy Awards

The 2025 edition of the Ghana Energy Awards has conferred its highest institutional honour on the Regional Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability of the University of Energy and Natural Resources. RCEES was named Energy Institution of the Year at the ceremony held on 28 November at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra. Receiving the award on behalf of the Centre was its director, Prof Samuel Gyamfi, together with the Vice Chancellor, Prof Elvis Asare Bediako, Mr Wisdom Togobo who serves on the RCEES Steering Committee, and Mr Benjamin Gyamera from the University Relations Office.

In addition to the institutional honour, Prof Gyamfi received two individual nominations for the Chief Green Trailblazer Award and the Energy Signature Award. These nominations reflect his steady contribution within Ghana’s energy sector and the influence of his leadership on the Centre’s direction.

RCEES was created under the Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence project with support from the World Bank. Its focus is on postgraduate training and applied research in energy and environmental sustainability. The Centre works through capacity development, stakeholder engagement, practical research, and policy support.

This recognition affirms the important part academic institutions play in shaping Ghana’s energy future. By naming RCEES as the leading energy institution of 2025, the Ghana Energy Awards highlights the significance of research, training, evidence based policy work, and community focused impact in driving national energy development.

As the Centre moves forward, this accolade strengthens its mandate to advance innovation, deepen capacity building, and support collaboration across government, industry, academia, and communities. It sets a clear benchmark for excellence within the sector.

The Centre dedicates this award to its staff, the support of the University Management led by the Vice Chancellor, and the continued contribution of all stakeholders whose commitment has shaped this achievement.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) successfully hosted a five-day training workshop under the European Union co-funded ImPreSSion project from 8th to 12th September, 2025. The ImPreSSion project, which runs for three years, is designed to strengthen Ghana’s higher education system by embedding green solutions, sustainability modules, and digital transformation into academic programs. The project is led by international partners RWTH Aachen University and Politecnico di Milano. The local partners include UENR which leads the energy component, while the University of Ghana and the University of Environment and Sustainable Development are responsible for agriculture and water, respectively.

The workshop at UENR specifically targeted faculty members and technical staff, including specialists in digital and communication support. Training sessions covered curriculum enhancement, modern pedagogical approaches, and the integration of digital tools to improve teaching and research delivery in water, energy, and agriculture-related programs. The program also equipped participants with technical skills to manage digital learning platforms and communication systems that support sustainability-focused education.

Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, Vice Chancellor of UENR, described the training as a timely and strategic intervention that aligns with the university’s mission to innovate in energy and sustainability education. Professor Nana Sarfo Agyemang Derkyi, Pro Vice Chancellor and Project Lead for the UENR Team, emphasised that equipping both academic and technical staff was essential to building the capacity of the institutions to train graduates capable of tackling Ghana’s pressing challenges in energy, water, and agriculture. In attendance supporting the event were Dr Mrs Georgina Asi Owusu,University Registrar, Prof. Samuel Gyamfi, Director ACE - Regional Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (RCEES) and Prof. John Kuwornu, Former Pro-Vice Chancellor.

The event created an opportunity for knowledge exchange, exposure to international best practices, and hands-on learning with digital technologies. By focusing on both faculty and technical staff, the workshop ensured that improvements go beyond curriculum design to include the infrastructure and support systems needed to deliver quality education. The outcomes are expected to directly contribute to Ghana’s progress toward Sustainable Development Goals 2, 6, and 7.

Activities during the week included:
Engagement with UENR management and Press Briefing
Visits to learning and video studios
Content development for online teaching modules and H5P assignments
Practical sessions on video recordings, including the use of AI video production tools
Recording of AI avatars for selected lecturers
A field trip to the Bui Power Authority Generation Station

The EPIC Africa on -Based modeling concluded on July 12th, marking a successful two weeks of intensive learning and collaboration on building long-term water-energy-food (WEF) security in Africa.

Held at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Ghana, the brought together a diverse group of participants, including students, faculty members, and professionals working across various sectors. Led by experts from the EPIC Africa Consortium, the program equipped participants with the knowledge and tools to develop effective WEF Nexus models using the CLEWs framework.

The program provided a dynamic learning experience with lectures, self-study sessions, and hands-on workshops. Participants learned energy systems modeling fundamentals, WEF Nexus mapping, reference energy system and built a simplified model for Ghana. They also explored scenarios with the simplified Ghana CLEWs model.

The Summer School concluded with presentations by participants on their Ghana WEF studies to the EPIC Consortium. These presentations showcased the valuable and gained throughout the program, highlighting the potential of these future WEF leaders to make a significant impact on Africa's water, energy, and food security.

Beyond the curriculum, the summer school fostered a vibrant learning environment. Participants actively networked and shared their expertise with fellow students, researchers, and trainers from the EPIC Africa Consortium.

We at the EPIC Africa Project are proud of the success of the Summer School and the incredible work accomplished by the participants. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Climate Compatible Growth project for their leadership in providing openly available CLEWs training materials. These resources served as a foundational crash course for the OSeMOSYS-CLEWs module, proving instrumental in the program's delivery.

As we reflect on the of this year's summer school, we look forward to continuing this journey and making even greater strides towards a sustainable energy future for Africa. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting initiatives!
