Days 6-7: Cohort 2 Moves from Learning to Doing - Into the Field, Into the Piles, Into the Business!
The past three days have been transformational for our Cohort 2 participants at the Nkabom Collaborative! Days 6 and 7 took our trainees deep into the practical heart of compost production with immersive sessions at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development Compost site, where theory finally met soil, sweat and satisfaction.
Participants constructed their own compost piles from locally sourced agro-waste, mastered layering techniques with browns and greens, took real-time temperature readings, and practised the art of turning, monitoring and troubleshooting under the guidance of our expert facilitators. From diagnosing an overheated pile to correcting moisture imbalance and reading the tell-tale signs of a healthy thermophilic phase, Cohort 2 is now producing compost with the confidence of seasoned practitioners.
But the learning did not stop at the compost yard.
Participants also stepped into the world of enterprise by exploring costing in Ghana cedis, pricing strategies, branding, packaging, labelling and the Business Model Canvas for a real compost business. Group presentations of participant-designed labels and business models brought the room to life, with creative brand names, sharp value propositions and impressive attention to the realities of the Ghanaian market. Cohort 2 is no longer just learning to make compost, they are preparing to build the businesses, brands and livelihoods that will shape Ghana's green agri-food future. The final stretch awaits, and we could not be prouder of the journey so far.
