Nkabom Collaborative - UESD

The Nkabom Collaborative at University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) has officially commenced a five-day intensive training programme in Fish Processing Technology and Sustainable Fish Production, aimed at equipping young people, pwd and internally displaced persons with practical and entrepreneurial skills in the aquaculture value chain.

The training programme brought together participants across the regions in Ghana, including youth groups, agribusiness practitioners, aquaculture workers, fish processors, students, entrepreneurs, and extension officers.

The opening ceremony featured remarks from Prof. Eric Nyarko Sampson, who underscored the critical role of aquaculture in advancing food security, youth employment, and Ghana’s blue economy.
Over the next five days, participants will undertake:
✅ Theoretical sessions on fish health, water quality management, food safety, preservation, and production cycles
✅ Hands-on practical training in fish processing, branding, and aquaculture entrepreneurship
✅ Industry-focused learning designed to translate knowledge into sustainable business opportunities

Winners of the Nkabom Africa Case Competition 2026 were honoured at a ceremony held at the Auditorium, Multi-Purpose Building, University of Environment and Sustainable Development - Somanya.

The event brought together the University community, partners of the Nkabom Collaborative, representatives from McGill University, and industry stakeholders to celebrate innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship.
Eastside Sankofa Industries Ghana emerged as overall winners with an agribusiness solution focused on reducing post-harvest mango waste through value-added products including juice, snacks, and body butter.
Team members — Godson Etsri, Benjamin Anyane Ansu, and Aaron Tawiah Blagodzi received a cash prize of CAD 10,000.

The first runners-up, Biotechnology for African Nutrition Collaborative, a joint team from University of Ghana (Nkabom Collaborative at UG) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (NKABOM COLLABORATIVE KNUST), received CAD 7,500 for their child nutrition project using indigenous crops and school-based agricultural systems.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Adam Turcotte of McGill University and McGill Sustainable Growth Initiative commended participants for their creativity and systems thinking, noting that the competition attracted over 100 entries globally, with finalists from Princeton University, University of Cambridge, and Arizona State University.

Mrs. Mary Abena Agyepong, Registrar of UESD and Project Administrator of the Nkabom Collaborative–UESD, highlighted the competition’s role in promoting innovation and practical problem-solving among young people across Africa.

The Chairman of the UESD Governing Council, Hon. The Nkabom Collaborative–UESD proudly participated in the AGI SME Investment Forum 2026 held at the Four Points by Sheraton, bringing together SMEs, industry leaders, financial institutions, investors, and key stakeholders within Ghana’s agribusiness and agro-processing ecosystem.
As part of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and Densu Associates engagement under the Nkabom Collaborative, the forum provided a strategic platform for innovation, partnerships, investment readiness, and enterprise growth.

Representing UESD’s Eastside Sankofa Industries were Aaron Tawiah Blagodzi and Benjamin Anyane Ansu, who showcased their award-winning business (Mango Puree) and shared the enterprise’s growth journey with potential investors and partners. Their presentation reflected the collaborative’s commitment to sustainable agribusiness, value addition, youth entrepreneurship, and community impact.

The forum also witnessed the presence of key leaders and stakeholders of the Nkabom Collaborative–UESD, including the Chairman of Council, Hon. Seth Terkper, who served as the Keynote Speaker; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson; the Principal Investigator of UESD Nkabom; the Project Administrator, Mrs. Mary Agyepong; the Training Coordinator, Cynthia ODURO Ameyaa; and Rita Adwoa Boateng.

From Partnership to Action:
UESD–GJA Driving Environmental Journalism

The collaboration between the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) and the Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is already making headlines.

The partnership aims to strengthen environmental journalism and sustainability communication in Ghana by equipping journalists with the skills to report accurately on climate change, environmental sustainability, and development issues.

As part of the initiative:
📌 UESD will organise training workshops, seminars, and short courses to build journalists’ capacity in environmental reporting

📌The GJA will support the dissemination of research findings, policy briefs, and community impact stories through its media platforms

📌Both institutions will collaborate on outreach programmes, including radio and television discussions

📌The partnership also opens opportunities for student journalists to engage with media professionals, promoting responsible and solution-driven journalism.

This is a strong step toward impactful storytelling and informed public discourse on sustainability in Ghana.

Nkabom Collaborative - UESD to Strengthen Environmental Journalism in Ghana

Nkabom Collaborative - UESD has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Eastern Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Koforidua marking a significant step toward advancing environmental literacy and sustainable development.

This partnership, sealed on April 14, 2026, at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, is set to empower journalists with the knowledge and tools needed to report effectively on critical environmental issues.

Through this collaboration, the Nkabom Collaborative will support capacity building in key strategic areas, including:
*Agro-waste processing
*Aquaculture technology
*Entrepreneurship

Over the coming years, journalists will be equipped to tell impactful, solution-driven stories that shape public awareness and policy around environmental sustainability.

The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) UESDGH, Somanya, Eastern Region, through the Nkabom Collaborative and in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and McGill University, has launched a 10-day Compost Production Training programme aimed at strengthening green enterprise development and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The training brings together participants from across the agro value chain, including farmers, agro-processors, waste handlers, extension officers, cooperatives, and youth groups. It is designed to equip trainees with practical knowledge and hands-on skills in organic waste management, soil health improvement, and compost production techniques. The programme combines in-house sessions with field work, allowing participants to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Over the course of the training, participants will be introduced to key concepts, including identifying suitable compost materials, proper segregation of organic waste, and applying effective composting methods.
