The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Economic Policy Competence Centre, is holding a 2-day Stakeholder Conference to examine the impact of illegal mining in Ghana.

The conference being held at Peduase Aburi in the Eastern Region, is being held under the theme: Galamsey, ‘Environmental Contamination and Food Poisoning in Ghana: A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective.’

The forum brought together a diverse group of policymakers, regulators, academics, civil society organisations, development partners, and environmental experts, to deliberate on the far-reaching effects of galamsey on the environment, food safety, public health, and livelihoods.

At the opening ceremony, the Head of Research and Innovations Unit, Prof. Felicia Annin, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson emphasised the need for urgent, evidence-based, and collaborative action to restore degraded ecosystems, safeguard public health, and promote sustainable livelihoods in mining-affected communities.

“Galamsey is not just an environmental issue. It is a health issue, a food security issue, and a livelihood issue. We must confront it with science, policy, and collective responsibility,” she stated.

The conference featured keynote presentations from Prof. Anthony Amoah, Mr. Sadick Adams, and Prof. Gibrilla Abass. The speakers highlighted the environmental degradation, economic losses, and public health risks associated with illegal mining, while proposing practical and sustainable policy interventions.

Through panel discussions and stakeholder deliberations, participants called for stronger law enforcement, improved institutional collaboration, greater community participation, and the provision of sustainable livelihood alternatives, for persons engaged in illegal mining.

Participants reaffirmed that addressing Ghana’s galamsey challenge requires a ‘united, multi-stakeholder approach’ to protect the nation’s natural resources and ensure a healthier future for current and future generations.

The FES–UESD Stakeholder Conference forms part of ongoing efforts by UESD to provide research-driven solutions and policy recommendations to address Ghana’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The Strategic Plan Draft Committee of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, Eastern Region, chaired by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah, has held a stakeholder engagement session in the Auditorium of the Multipurpose Building as part of developing the University's 2026–2030 Strategic Plan.

The consultative meeting brought together representatives from the University's academic and administrative staff, students, strategic partners, industry, and members of the University's host communities to solicit their perspectives and recommendations on the University's future direction.

The engagement provided stakeholders the opportunity to contribute ideas and share expectations that will help shape UESD's strategic priorities over the next five years. It also reaffirmed the University's commitment to inclusive governance, participatory planning, and stakeholder-driven decision-making in charting a sustainable path for institutional growth and development.
