Dzebetato Residents Appeal for Potable Water, Healthcare and Better Roads

Residents of Dzebetato in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region are appealing to government and relevant authorities to urgently address persistent challenges affecting access to potable water, healthcare and road infrastructure in the community.

The residents say access to clean and reliable drinking water remains one of their biggest concerns. According to them, the community depends heavily on a local water source known as the Dzebeta, which they say is not considered safe for drinking.

Despite concerns about the quality of the water, residents say they are often left with little choice but to rely on it for several household activities, including cooking, bathing and cleaning, because of the lack of a dependable alternative.

They explained that pipe-borne water reaches the community only about once a week, usually on Saturdays. The limited supply, they said, is compounded by inadequate water-storage facilities, making it difficult for households to store enough water to last through the week.

Some residents also claim that prolonged use of the untreated water has been associated with skin rashes and other health concerns within the community.

Residents say the water crisis is not the only major challenge confronting Dzebetato.

The community, according to residents, does not have a permanent and properly functioning CHPS compound capable of providing adequate healthcare services to residents.

They say people who require medical attention beyond what is available locally are often referred to health facilities in Sogakope. However, the poor condition of roads connecting the community to other areas makes such journeys difficult, particularly during emergencies.

Residents further explain that transportation to Sogakope can be expensive, placing an additional financial burden on families who already have to deal with medical expenses.

They believe that a properly equipped CHPS compound within the community would significantly improve access to healthcare and reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for basic medical services.

Another major concern raised by residents is the state of the community’s roads.

They say poor road conditions affect movement within and outside Dzebetato and make it difficult for residents to access essential services. The situation also affects the transportation of sick persons and increases the cost of travelling to nearby towns.

Residents are therefore appealing to the South Tongu District Chief Executive, Hon. Victoria Dzeklo; the Member of Parliament for South Tongu, Hon. Maxwell Kwame Lukutor; and the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, to intervene and help address the challenges.

Their demands include a sustainable source of potable water, adequate water-storage facilities, a permanent and properly equipped CHPS compound, and improved roads.

For the residents of Dzebetato, these are not merely requests for development projects. They say access to clean water, healthcare and reliable roads directly affects their health, safety, livelihoods and overall quality of life.

The community is therefore calling on the relevant authorities and development partners to listen to their concerns and take concrete steps towards improving living conditions in Dzebetato.

Dzebetato Community Appeals for Support to Complete Self-Help Health Centre Project

Residents of Dzebetato in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region are appealing to the Government of Ghana, corporate organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), philanthropists, and private individuals to support the completion of a community-initiated health centre aimed at improving access to quality healthcare.

The community has successfully constructed a 13-room health facility through self-help efforts and communal labour, but says it lacks the financial resources and logistical support needed to complete and equip the project for operation.

According to residents, Dzebetato currently relies on a single-room Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound, which they say is inadequate to meet the healthcare needs of the growing population. They explained that the limited space and lack of essential medical equipment have made it difficult for health workers to provide quality healthcare services.

The situation is particularly challenging during medical emergencies. Residents say patients often have to be transported on motorbikes over poor road networks from Dzebetato to Sogakope to receive treatment at larger health facilities.

Community members lamented that these difficult journeys have, on several occasions, delayed emergency care and, in some cases, contributed to the loss of lives.

Determined to change the situation, the people of Dzebetato mobilized resources to begin constructing their own health centre. The initiative was spearheaded by the Assembly Member for the Dzebetato Electoral Area, Hon. Peter Newton Doe, who assumed office in 2019.

Beyond the health facility, the community has also allocated 21 acres of land for future government development projects. According to community leaders, the land is available for any initiative that will improve the socio-economic development of the area, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and other public infrastructure.

Residents believe completing and operationalizing the health centre will significantly reduce the burden of travelling long distances for medical care, improve maternal and child healthcare, strengthen emergency response, and save lives.

They are therefore calling on the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, the South Tongu District Assembly, development partners, NGOs, corporate institutions, and benevolent individuals to partner with the community to complete and equip the facility.

Community leaders remain optimistic that with the necessary support, the Dzebetato Health Centre will soon become operational and provide quality healthcare services not only to Dzebetato but also to surrounding communities.
