With elections coming up next week, I’ve found myself thinking less about the noise…and more about the responsibility🗳️🇿🇲

Maybe it’s because of the spaces I’ve been in lately, sitting in policy rooms, engaging in youth dialogues, representing young people in development conversations. I’ve really seen how decisions made at the top eventually reach all of us, in very real ways.

As a young person from Matero, and now a Master’s candidate in Human Rights, Governance and Development, these things don’t feel abstract to me. Governance is not theory, it’s lived. It’s the price of mealie meal, it’s access to opportunities, it’s whether young people feel seen, heard, and included.

And I think that’s what elections represent for me right now.

Not just voting, but understanding that the Constitution gives us both a right and a responsibility. That participation doesn’t start and end at the ballot box. That leadership should reflect the people it serves, especially in a country as young as ours.

I’ve had conversations with so many young people who feel disconnected from decision-making spaces. Not because they don’t care, but because they don’t always see themselves in those spaces. And that’s something we have to keep challenging.

Because the truth is, young people are not just the future of this country. We are already part of its present. We are already doing the work, leading initiatives, building solutions, and contributing to national development in our own ways.

Zambia is at an important moment.

And I think many of us, especially young people, are no longer just watching from the sidelines. We are learning, we are engaging, and in our own ways, we are preparing to take up space where it matters.

Next week, Zambia decides🗳️
Let’s show up thoughtfully🫱🏽‍🫲🏾🇿🇲
