HAPPY INTERNATIONAL LABOUR DAY
Today is International Workers’ Day and as an institution that values work, we wish to celebrate all hardworking workers across Ghana and the world over.
I would also like to remind every Ghanaian worker, both in the public and private sectors, to be diligent and approach work with a different mindset and commitment. Work is not a punishment but an initiation by the Creator for the sustenance of our livelihood.
In my latest book, The Theology of Work: The Nexus Between Work and Faith Life, I discuss the origin of work, its nature, the culture of work and its mandate, and how particular Christians must approach work and have a striking balance between their faith life and work life. I also emphasise that we must view work as a divine responsibility in this physical space. As God created a garden and instructed man to work in it for his livelihood, this was a call to work.
As we celebrate this occasion, I want to draw your attention to the fact that if God is the originator of work and instructed man to work to sustain himself, then we must have a deep reflection on work and approach it as first to honour God, before the employer. Employers, on the other hand, must create an enabling and conducive environment for workers to be effective, efficient, and excellent in their daily responsibilities with fair remuneration and good conditions of service.
As we reflect on the theme for this year’s celebration, the dignity of labour, inclusive growth, and workers’ well-being, particularly addressing modern challenges such as artificial intelligence, gig work, and adapting labour protection, let us unite to make the working space a safer environment for all to thrive and contribute to national socio-economic development. I also advise workers to take advantage of the emergence of artificial intelligence to leverage their work and secure their place, as the era is not waiting for anyone. Let us all work together to make the future of work more desirable and attractive for all and contribute meaningfully to our economic development for the benefit of all.
GOD BLESS GHANA, ALL EMPLOYERS AND ALL WORKERS IN ALL SECTORS OF OUR ECONOMY.
