Fr. Ebenezer Hanson writes........

GOD LOVES THE FULANI TOO:
May peace and Joy of Christ Jesus, the Good Shepherd, reign in your hearts forever!

Who is a Fulani? Just take time to ponder on the question for a minute before you answer? May your answer not be based on the stereotype notion against cattle rearers in general. Have you had a real encounter with them? Have you observed their level of courage and trust in the Providence of God? Are you aware that they fight ruthlessly to protect their herds of sheep or cattle? Are you aware that it was their nomadic activities that marked most of our major and minor trade routes as well as road networks?

Well, if a Fulani is one who tends sheep and cattle, then God Himself is a Fulani. Abel was favoured as a livestock farmer, Abraham departed from Ur with his herds of livestock, Jacob kept his father in-laws’s sheep, Moses was tending the sheep of Jethro, his father in-law before meeting God in the theophanic encounter. It is also said that Mary’s father, Joachim, reared sheep. No wonder Jesus, though a carpenter’s son, referred to Himself as the CHIEF SHEPHERD.

The word Fulani actually means a person who tends sheep and, by extension, cattle by leading them to pasture. In yesterday’s First Reading from the First Book of Samuel, something dramatic happened. After God rejected Saul as king of Israel, He sent Samuel to the house of Bethlehem to anoint a son of Jesse (Jesus will later on be born in a manger in Bethlehem and will be seen by Shepherds) God was specific when He said He would choose the one to be anointed. However, the prophet projected his own mind and desire over the WILL of God. Thus, he called for the seven sons of Jesse but God refused each of them.

It was clear that both Samuel, the prophet and Jesse, the father, were humanly united in thinking from their carnal selves and not from their spiritual minds. Hence, God chose the lad, the youngest son who was tending the sheep in the bush. Thus, God chose the Fulani, the one whom not even the father regarded fit to rule his people.

Lesson: Beware of leaders who do less discernment when it comes to spiritual matters. They will mislead and misguide you. Many of our men of God today present God from their own human eyes, not from the lens of the Holy Spirit.

In today’s First Reading, David, the Fulani, wins a fierce battle which the fine and well bred high class king, Saul, could not fight. Note here that in addition to the pessimistic perception of David’s father and the prophet, the giant enemy also undermined the Fulani ahead of the battle.

Lesson: Two or more witnesses’ testimony is not always TRUE. Your biological father, cleric and an enemy may agree to tarnish your image but when you trust in God, He will VINDICATE you big time.

BEWARE OF SUPERFICIAL JUDGEMENT:

Now, are you aware that Omari Sanda of City FM is a Funali? You see how incisive and focused he is in his journalism career? He is used to tension from people who always saw the cattle rearer as an enemy. Jesus Christ was used to tension also as He always faced tension of hatred in His prophetic mission. Remember His disciples ate someone’s corn on a Sabbath Day.

May I tell you another good side of the Fulani. By the way, the dialect of the Fulani is Fulfude. Just like the Akans, they have variations in their language but they generally understand one another. They do not easily trust strangers but once they do, they are ready and willing to lay down their lives for their friends.

My Own Testimony:
My first encounter with the Fulani was August 2022 when I settled at the City of God to discern the Will God while on leave. The land shares boundaries to the West and South with Funali people from Burkina Faso and Togo respectively. While they responded to my greetings with suspicious eyes, they grazed on my small vegetable farm with their cattle in my very presence one afternoon.

I was so angry that I skipped a meal. However, at night, I went on my knees in prayer for direction. Then a soft voice whispered: “Love them, Just love them…” It was Christmas so I shared some gifts with them. I then went and greeted them at their Ramadan the next year. Today, we are like brothers from the same womb. Their children learn and play with the natives while their women work with the natives on gari production.

I hope I am arousing some good perception about the people our society do not regard. You know what, most of them do not own the cattle they rear. They are just caretakers. The owners are the big men in politics living in the city. Yet, they put their lives on the line caring for the cattle and sheep day and night, rain or shine. No wonder Jesus Christ would liken Himself to them: THE GOOD SHEPHERD LAYS DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS SHEEP.

When you look for a hermit and you do not find one, take time to observe an active Fulani boy or man. They depend highly on God in their wilderness as St. John the Baptist did.

It is therefore sad how even some owners of businesses are negligent towards their workers’ plights; some parents are irresponsible towards their children’s needs; leaders care less about the plights of their subjects. To all who show high level of responsibility towards others’ goods and properties, may God bless you as He blessed David, the first Fulani king of Israel.

Do not be afraid of the Fulani, love them and they will love you in return.

Peace and Joy!
