23 years ago today, on Monday, 18 August 2003, the KNUST Faculty of Law was established. An official inauguration followed on 3 March 2004. It was Ghana's second Faculty of Law and the first located outside Accra, thereby broadening opportunities for legal education in the country. From the 2003/2004 academic year, two streams of the LL.B. programme were offered: one for WASSCE/SSCE holders, 45 in number, and another for first-degree holders, 12 in number. The inaugural class comprised 57 students, including 32 females and 25 males. Of these, 20 were international students. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Hanson Ofori-Amankwah served as the founding Dean, supported by 11 initial faculty members and 5 administrative staff, positioning the Faculty as a pacesetter in Ghana’s legal education.

Three law lecturers—Dr. Maame Efua Addadzi-Koom, Dr. Elizabeth Archampong, and Ms. Rose Asamoah—research the ECOWAS Court's role in promoting women’s economic justice in West Africa. They note that while the Court’s jurisprudence on the right to work has focused on the public service, it can extend to the private sector through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) women’s rights regime. This regime, established via the Protocol on Women and Youth in Trade, could enable the Court to decide on cross-border trade issues affecting women, including formalising the informal sector, dominated by women, thereby expanding economic justice beyond traditional public sector limits.

Mavis Kwainoe (LL.B’ 07), who is currently a PhD candidate at the KNUST Faculty of Law, has been appointed as Board Secretary of the National Sports Authority, a role that will see her provide legal and governance advisory services to the Board. The Faculty congratulates her on this achievement and wishes her the best.

Prof. (Mrs) Renee Aku Sitsofe Morhe, an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Private Law at the KNUST Faculty of Law, was a guest speaker at the 13th Jurists’ Confab, organised by the University of Cape Coast Faculty of Law, under the theme: Access versus Standards: The Future of Legal Education in Ghana. In her address, Prof. Morhe stressed that legal education reforms should be assessed not only by improved access but also by value for money, institutional readiness, and the capacity to maintain quality through adequate infrastructure, staffing, and accreditation. She further advocated stronger clinical legal education and closer collaboration between academia and legal practitioners to ensure graduates gain the practical skills needed to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
