IS YOUR MOBILE MONEY REALLY SAFE ?
Q1. What is Mobile Money?
Mobile Money simply means money that is mobile. When we say something is mobile it means it is easy to move. So when we say mobile money it means money that can move easily.
Q2. When and how did we arrive at Mobile Money?
Many years ago there were no banks, so people kept their money physically on them, but it got missing when they were going to work or to market or when traveling etc.
Sometimes it also gets stolen by your relatives, neighbors, friends and thieves who come as pick pockets or armed robbers who attack homes and business people who carry cash on their way to business.
So the banks came in to collect and protect our money.
Q3. What were the challenges people had with the banks?
> The banks were not many in our local neighborhoods and homes
> They were far away from our houses
> They were not always open, they open and closed at certain times and on certain days.
> There were long procedures to get your own money at the bank by joining long queues.
Q.4 So what did the banks do about these problems?
A. They created the virtual bank called ATM to work whiles the banking hall was closed or choked with so many customers.
Q.5 Did the ATM solve all the problems which the banking halls had.
A. No it did not. It had withdrawal limits, it had technology breakdowns, it had shortage of cash and more importantly it was also far from the homes of customers.
Q.6 What was the way forward?
A. Whiles the banks run out of ideas and options the telecoms found a solution and that gave birth to Mobile Money. Money which is been stored on your phone and easy to access and move it around which ease without hustle.
Q.7 What was the breakthrough for Mobile Money?
A. The telecoms were wise and smart, they solved the biggest problem of the banking sector by bringing people closer to their money right on their phones close to their homes.
How?? They then partnered ordinary individuals who had local business already running in the homes and neighbourhoods to become their Merchants. These Merchant became what I call the "Door Step Bank" where the bank came to the door step of people.
Q.8 How did Mobile Money benefit most people?
>You can do susu or savings on your phone easily.
>You can carry your money on your phone and nobody will know easily.
>You can link your bank account to your phone and make all your withdrawals from there without ever going to the bank.
> You can send your money to go on long journeys without you ever moving an inch.
>You can use your MoMo to make payments when you run out of physical cash in town.
Q.9 What are the challenges with Mobile Money?
>Wrong Transactions to wrong persons
> Wrong or Forgotten PIN Codes
> Mobile Money Fraud
Q.10 What have the Telecoms done about the Mobile Money Challenges?
A. So far they have been able to solve the first two major challenges:
>Wrong transactions can be reversed when reported to Customer Care help lines.
>Wrong/Forgotten PIN codes can be reset when customer care is contacted. Sometimes its difficult to reach them quickly but when you keep trying you will get help due to long queues on help lines.
Q. 11 What are the Telecoms doing about the recent surge in Mobile Money Fraud?
To tell the truth, the Telecoms didn't see this Level of Fraud coming along with their solution from the beginning. Just like the banks didn't see Mobile Money Solution as an option from the beginning.
The telecoms gave some level of security from the onset but they failed to tighten the security as the years went by and the hackers, scammers and fraudsters began studying their systems and penetrated due to the allowance that the telecoms did not see at the beginning.
Now the fraudsters are in the system together with the subscribers and they understand the system far better than even the inventors. The subscribers are the sufferers of their attacks and strikes every single day without stopping and the inventors don't know how to find them.
Q.12 So Is your MoMo Account Safe in the future?
A. Yes your MoMo account is securely safe if you only do one thing, LEARN TO PROTECT YOUR MONEY everyday because whiles you sleep and think you know it all the fraudsters are awake learning to strike a new FORMAT to take away your money from your phone easily. Remember the money on your phone is Mobile and it can move in or out easily if you don't acquire the knowledge to protect it.
That is the reason why this Mobile Money Protection Academy has come for such a time as this. We have investigated all the fraud formats that are been used everyday and even the new ones and the ones yet to come. So that we can teach you to be aware of them and not fall victim to it. If the Telecoms can't protect us we owe it a duty to protect our money and our relatives.
Every week we will show you a fraud case study and teach you how it was executed by the fraudsters and how to identify such schemes and avoid them entirely. We will show you signs and indicators of a new upcoming fraud so you avoid it.
So Like the page even as you are reading it now, set it on priority to see all notifications and share this post to create awareness to save yourself and relatives who are using mobile money as well.
We will be speaking on these issues on the local community radio stations in Accra. If you would like to invite and interview us we will gladly be available on any Radio or TV platform.
