Sometimes, teachers never truly know which seed will become a mighty tree. 🌱❤️

In 2023, a young boy named Alifui Cyril sat in my Basic School Science class. Like every other learner, he attended lessons, participated in practical activities, asked questions, and learned the fundamentals of science. At the time, I never imagined the journey that lay ahead for him.

Today, he walked back into my life—not as my Basic School student, but as a proud graduate of Kpetoe Senior High School, where he successfully studied Science. Seeing him stand before me, full of confidence and hope, brought tears of joy to my eyes. He is now waiting to pursue Chemistry or Nursing at the tertiary level.

Moments like this remind me why quality science teaching at the basic school level is so important. The lessons we teach today become the foundation on which tomorrow’s doctors, nurses, engineers, pharmacists, and scientists are built.

Many people focus on Senior High School and university, but the truth is that greatness begins much earlier—in the Basic School classroom, where curiosity is nurtured, confidence is built, and dreams begin to take shape.

Cyril, thank you for coming back to see me. Your visit means more than words can express. You have reminded me that every lesson taught with passion, every practical activity, and every encouragement given to a learner is never wasted.

This is why I will continue to teach science with all my heart—because somewhere in every classroom sits a future scientist, healthcare professional, innovator, or leader waiting for someone to believe in them.

Congratulations, Cyril! I am incredibly proud of you, and I pray that God guides every step of your journey. Your future is bright.

🌟♻️ FROM WASTE TO WONDERS! ♻️🌟

When learning becomes action, amazing things happen!

Following our class project on Waste Management and Recycling, one of my learners, Paulinus Heloo, accepted the challenge to transform waste into something meaningful.

His journey began with a bicycle made from waste paper, and today he has taken his creativity a step further by constructing a motorcycle from waste cartons. 🏍️

What many people see as rubbish, Paulinus sees as opportunity. His projects demonstrate that recycling is not just about managing waste—it’s about innovation, creativity, and protecting our environment.

As a teacher, moments like these remind me that practical, hands-on learning inspires learners to think beyond the classroom and become problem-solvers in their communities.

♻️ Turning Waste into Innovation! 🚲✨

Today, during our lesson on Waste Management, one of my brilliant learners, Paulinus Heloo, demonstrated that waste is not always useless. Using only discarded waste paper, he creatively designed and constructed a beautiful bicycle model.

This activity helped learners understand the importance of the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle while developing their creativity, problem-solving skills, and appreciation for environmental conservation.

As a Science teacher, nothing brings me more joy than seeing learners transform classroom knowledge into practical solutions. Paulinus’ work is a reminder that with imagination and determination, waste can become something valuable.

Let’s encourage our children to see opportunities where others see rubbish. Together, we can build a cleaner environment and a more innovative future.

The inadequate number of girls pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects and careers remains a concern that requires urgent attention from all stakeholders in education.

Recently, during a workshop organized to train teachers in the effective delivery of science practical lessons, a striking observation was made. Out of 36 teachers and Science Coordinators representing districts across the Volta Region, only 3 were female teachers. In addition, there were only 4 female Science Coordinators in attendance. This highlights the significant gender gap that still exists in STEM-related fields, even among educators who are responsible for inspiring the next generation.

When girls and women are underrepresented in STEM, we lose valuable talent, diverse perspectives, and innovative ideas that are essential for solving real-world problems. The effects are far-reaching, impacting scientific advancement, technological innovation, and national development.

As educators, parents, and community leaders, we must intentionally encourage our girls to develop an interest in STEM from an early age. We need to provide mentorship, create opportunities for hands-on learning, celebrate female role models in STEM, and challenge stereotypes that discourage girls from pursuing science and technology-related careers.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to explore, create, innovate, and excel in STEM. The future of science and technology depends on the talents of both boys and girls.

STEM education becomes more meaningful when learners can relate concepts to the materials around them. The use of local materials in teaching STEM promotes creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning without depending on expensive equipment.

From using bottles to demonstrate sound, sticks for measurement, pulleys at local mechanic shops, or simple household items for experiments, learners begin to see science and technology in their everyday lives.

As teachers, let us turn our environment into a living laboratory and inspire innovation with what we already have around us. STEM is not only about high-tech tools; it is about curiosity, creativity, and practical learning. 🌱🔬⚙️
