Keynote Address by the Dean – Prof. George H. Coffie

The Dean of the Faculty of Built and Natural Environment, George H. Coffie, delivered the keynote address at the faculty durbar on the theme “Enhancing Academic Excellence and Student–Faculty Collaboration.”

Reflecting on the early years of the faculty, Prof. Coffie noted that the faculty began with the Department of Building Technology, which at the time was the only department with students. He expressed appreciation to the Heads of Department, Faculty Officer and staff whose dedication has contributed to the faculty’s growth into three departments and five academic programmes.

He challenged both staff and students to reject mediocrity and pursue academic excellence, emphasizing the need to strengthen course delivery and align teaching with global standards comparable to those in Dubai and Singapore.

The Dean also encouraged stronger commitment to research that addresses real societal challenges, particularly those affecting Ghana and Africa, while highlighting the importance of collaboration between students and lecturers.

He concluded by reaffirming the faculty’s commitment to improving teaching, learning spaces, and industry engagement to strengthen academic excellence.

Faculty Programmes Coordinator, Dr. Peter Agbaxode addressed students during Tuesday’s Faculty Durbar on the importance of discipline, responsibility, and effective career planning.

He reminded students that their primary mandate at the university is learning, stressing that academic engagement and personal development are essential for success. He encouraged students to maintain regular class attendance, demonstrate professionalism, and uphold good conduct both inside and outside the classroom.

Dr. Agbaxode also emphasized the importance of time management, continuous self-improvement, and strong communication skills, noting that informal languages such as PGIN are not official channels for academic communication.
He further encouraged students to actively participate in faculty activities, co-curricular engagements, and peer learning opportunities as part of their professional growth.

Concluding his address, Dr. Agbaxode urged students to make good use of available faculty resources, seek guidance from lecturers when necessary, and intentionally build the discipline and competence required for successful careers in the built and natural environment sectors.

Rev. Foster Aharon, Faculty Officer, addressed students during the Faculty Durbar on Tuesday, where he explained the academic organogram of the faculty and the proper administrative channels students should follow.

He emphasized that students are directly responsible to the departments to which they belong and should route official requests—such as deferment letters and other academic communications—through their departments first before they move through the faculty structure.

His presentation helped students better understand the administrative processes of the faculty and encouraged them to follow the correct procedures when submitting official requests.

He noted that the department offers BTech Facilities and Estate Management and BSc Architectural Technology programmes.

Addressing students, Dr. Ahiabu encouraged them to take their studies seriously, with particular emphasis on studio work. He cautioned that failure in studio projects could mean repeating the class.

He also stressed the importance of entrepreneurship, urging students to begin practical work and business ventures while still in school. Drawing from his own experience, he shared that during his student years, he designed building plans and trained many draftsmen.
