The African Peacebuilding and Developmental Dynamics (APDD) Programme of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) has featured Prof. Mary Boatemaa Setrana, Director of the Centre and IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, in its latest alumni spotlight.

Reflecting on her journey as a 2017 African Peacebuilding Network (APN) Individual Research Grant Fellow, Prof. Setrana shares how the fellowship became a defining moment in her academic and professional trajectory, laying the foundation for a decade of impactful research, scholarship, partnerships, mentorship and policy engagement across Africa.

Her story underscores the transformative power of investing in African scholars and strengthening African-led knowledge production to address the continent’s development and peacebuilding challenges.

In line with efforts by the Metropolis International Migration Network to promote dialogue and knowledge exchange on contemporary migration issues, the Centre for Migration Studies invites you to join the inaugural webinar on Externalization of Migration Governance and its Impact on the Right to Asylum.

Organised in the lead-up to World Refugee Day 2026, the webinar will bring together academic, policy and practitioner perspectives to examine evolving refugee regimes and the externalization of migration governance and what these developments mean for protection standards, international cooperation and the rights of migrants and displaced populations.

The webinar forms part of a new cross-sectoral series leading up to the 2026 Metropolis International Conference, Rethinking African Mobility: Past Lessons, Present Realities, Future Possibilities, which will be hosted by the University of Ghana, Accra, from 17–20 November, 2026.

The event is organised by the Metropolis International Migration Network in partnership with the Centre and the IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, University of Ghana, Toronto Metropolitan University, Universidad Nacional de Lanús, Argentina and SGH Warsaw School of Economics.

Director of the Centre and IDRC Research Chair West Africa (Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa), Prof. Mary Boatemaa Setrana, reflects on her scholarly journey, highlighting how her research has, over the years, focused on migration, forced displacement, gender and migration governance and their relationship to social change and transformation, while advancing the need to centre African perspectives in global debates on mobility.

As the Centre prepares to host the 2026 Metropolis International Migration Network Conference as part of the culminating activities marking the Centre's 20th Anniversary, she envisions critical conversations that place African scholarship, data and lived experiences at the centre of global migration debates and contribute to rethinking African mobility and migration governance.

The Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) and the IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, in partnership with the African Union’s African Centre for the Study and Research on Migration (ACSRM) and the Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE) in Migration & Health at Uppsala University, Sweden, are hosting over 20 PhD students and early-career researchers for a two-day training workshop on migration theories, methodologies, academic writing and mentorship.

The workshop seeks to strengthen African migration scholarship, deepen understanding of migration governance, and mentor emerging researchers working on migration, forced displacement, migration and health and the psychology of migration.

The 2nd CMS@20 Conference continues this morning with a policy dialogue on “The Relationship Between Migration Research and Policy Practice in Africa,” chaired by Dr. Stefan Rother of the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA). The session brings together leading voices from research, policy, and practice to interrogate how evidence shapes migration governance across the continent.

Speakers include Prof. Leander Kandilige of the Centre for Migration Studies (CMS), Abena Owusua Amponsah-Bio of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Prof. Jesper Bjarnesen of the Nordic Africa Institute, Kachi Madubuko of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and Dr. Oliver Bakewell of the Global Development Institute, who will collectively explore the intersections between migration research and policy implementation in Africa.

Ahead of the opening of the 2nd CMS@20 International Conference, the co-hosts of the event, Prof. Mary Setrana, Director of the Centre and Prof. Andrew Geddes, Director of the Migration Policy Centre at the European University Institute, appeared on GTV’s Breakfast Show to discuss key dimensions of contemporary migration.

During the discussion, they explored the regional dimensions of migration, highlighting the complexity and diversity of mobility patterns within and beyond Africa. They noted that migration is often misrepresented in public discourse, with dominant narratives frequently overlooking its structural drivers and lived realities.

The discussion concluded with an invitation to researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public to participate in the 2nd CMS@20 International Conference, which seeks to foster dialogue and strengthen engagement on migration issues in an increasingly interconnected world.
