The new HOTSPOT experiments are about to start. In this round we will investigate the effects of raw oil, plastic, cadmium and temperature on the basis of marine food web, hoping to contribute with new knowledge on the effects of marine and maritime pollution at the coast of Ghana.

Last weeks we have been very fortunate to host two UCC students, Delove and Ernest, at DTU. They have worked hard on identifying and counting zooplankton from the first HOTSPOT field campaign, and studying phytoplankton, zooplankton and oyster cultures. Their new skills will be very helpful for the project, and, hopefully, for many future activities at UCC.

Yesterday's topic in the multiple stressor course was fisheries, and the day included a trip to Elmina. In the photos the students are interviewing fishermen in the Elmina harbour (and taking a few selfies..).

Background:
HOTSPOT is a three-year collaborative research project of the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Cape Coast, Ghana and jointly financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the University of Cape Coast. The project aims at identifying the main sources of pollution in the coast of Ghana and quantifying their effects on the marine life – alone and in combination with the effects of climate change and with the ultimate objective of contributing to the sustainable management of Ghana’s marine environment and its resources, and to build up research capacity in the maritime area for academia and policy.
