LET PURE LOVE BE YOUR MOTIVATING FORCE pt 3
As alluded in the previous episodes, many people's actions are motivated by all the wrong forces except the right one - PURE LOVE. Among the wrong forces is coveting for material wealth. There are those whose actions are only informed by the money or material gains they would derive. When they find out that what they are doing won't fetch them any material wealth, they feel reluctant to get involve and in many cases not do it at all.
On the other hand, if they realize some material gains will result from the intended activity, they will go heaven and hell to do it regardless of the repercussions on others and the world.
We are living in a world where people are killing their own blood relations because of the force of wealth; people are engaging in politics, clerical vocation, marital relationships etc not because of pure love BUT for material gains.
The Holy Book entreats us not to allow our lives to be influenced by love for material wealth - "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have'' (Hebrews 13:5a).
One of the biblical characters who caused material wealth to be his strong motivation is Gehazi (2 Kings 5:15-27).
Gehazi was an apprentice prophet under Elisha. Elisha by the power of God healed Naaman, the Syrian Army Commander. The Commander in appreciation offered material gifts to the Prophet but the Prophet refused the gifts.
This is an eye-opener to 21st century men of God who think that every preaching appointment must be commensurate with a monetary or material gift (honorarium). Elisha is teaching us to listen to the voice of the Spirit of the Lord so that we know when to accept gifts and when to refuse.
The text says that although Naaman urged, compelled Elisha, the Prophet still refused it. Unfortunately, in these days the reverse is what is being witnessed. It is the preachers who are chasing up for honorarium. The irony is that some even go to the extent of charging (quoting amounts they will collect).
Were they called to preach, sing the gospel, or make merchandise with it? (By the way, it is not only the Preachers and worshipers who are getting it wrong. As asserted earlier on, many others - ushers, instrumentalists, medical doctors, nurses, politicians, messengers etc.)
Emphasis is being made on the Preachers because their vocation is given the topmost notch over all other vocations by the Holy scriptures. Thus, they are supposed to show the way. Unfortunately, the modern times is flooded with people of this noble profession who are making "merchandise" of their followers (2 Peter 2:3). Every and anything is being sold under the disguise of "honhom mu akwankyere" (spiritual direction). Before the above statement is misconstrued let it be known that the author of this write-up is not against honouring preachers and worshipers. After all, the bible enjoins us to give them "double honour" (1 Timothy 5:17); and "hold them in the highest regard" (1Thess 5:12-13).
What is being questioned is when these honoraria become the ultimate motivating force. Something more than honorarium should move the preachers and worshipers to do the work of the Lord. That thing should be nothing but Pure Love. A love underpinned by Christ's example.
The author of Hebrews give us a clue as to why he admonishes us to "keep free from the love of money". He re-echoed the promise of God to the people of old. "NEVER WILL I LEAVE YOU; NEVER WILL I FORSAKE YOU" (Hebrews 13:5b cf. Deuteronomy 31:6,8; Joshua 1:5;).
Let's those of us who profess to be "Christ-ians" keep ourselves from making monetary gains as our motivating force by trusting in this unrelenting assurance of Jehovah that "He will *never* leave us nor forsake us". On this foundation the first century believers ply their lives.
We will continue with the "Gehazi" story in the next episode.
May we receive the consciousness of PURE LOVE today in Jesus' name. Amen
