INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGES IMPRESSES AT UNIMAC'S MAIDEN INTERNATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION
The Institute of Languages (UniMAC-IL) delivered an impressive display of linguistic excellence and cultural diversity as it joined other faculties, schools and international students in the University of Media, Arts and Communication's (UniMAC) maiden International Day celebration.
Organised by the Centre for Global Education and Collaborations under the theme "Unity in Diversity: Bridging Cultures and Building Futures," the event brought together students, staff, diplomatic partners and members of the university community to celebrate the rich diversity of cultures, languages and traditions represented at UniMAC.
The colourful occasion featured exhibitions of traditional cuisines, cultural artefacts, fashion, music and performances from various countries, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflected the University's growing international outlook and commitment to intercultural understanding.
Among the outstanding participants was the Institute of Languages, whose presentation drew admiration from the audience for its creativity, professionalism and rich cultural content.
Representing the Faculty of Applied Languages and the School of Translation and Bilingual Business Studies, students showcased their linguistic competence through captivating recitals in Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. The performances highlighted not only the students' proficiency in foreign languages but also the Institute's dedication to developing graduates capable of communicating effectively across cultures and international boundaries.
The students, elegantly dressed in the traditional attire of the countries whose languages they study, also treated patrons to colourful cultural performances and traditional dances that celebrated the customs and heritage of diverse nations. Their presentation attracted enthusiastic applause from participants and underscored the importance of language education in fostering global understanding, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Beyond the performances, the Institute mounted an interactive exhibition to showcase its academic programmes and engage prospective students and visitors. Faculty members and students highlighted the numerous opportunities available through programmes in Applied Languages, Translation and Bilingual Business Studies, explaining how multilingual education equips graduates for careers in diplomacy, international business, education, media, tourism, interpretation and international organisations.
The Dean of the Faculty of Applied Languages, Rev. Yaw Odame Gyau, commended the University for introducing the International Day initiative, describing it as an important platform for promoting intercultural dialogue and strengthening relationships among people from diverse backgrounds.
He noted that language remains one of the most powerful instruments for building bridges across cultures and fostering international cooperation.
"In today's interconnected world, multilingualism is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Initiatives such as this expose our students to different cultures, broaden their perspectives and prepare them to become global citizens capable of contributing meaningfully wherever they find themselves. This is the kind of university experience that transforms lives and prepares graduates for the demands of the global marketplace," Rev. Gyau stated.
He added that the Institute of Languages remains committed to producing graduates with the linguistic competence, cultural intelligence and professional skills required to thrive in diplomacy, international trade, translation, education and other globally competitive professions.
Delivering the welcome address, the Director of the Centre for Global Education and Collaborations, Dr. Lawrencia Agyapong, described the maiden International Day as a significant milestone in UniMAC's internationalisation agenda, saying it represents UniMAC's unwavering commitment to building an inclusive university community where diversity is celebrated as a catalyst for innovation, academic excellence and sustainable global partnerships.
She said the celebration was designed to create a platform where cultures are appreciated, diversity is celebrated and meaningful global partnerships are strengthened.
"Internationalisation is about people, partnerships and possibilities. By bringing together different cultures under one platform, we are nurturing mutual respect, promoting global citizenship and preparing our students to become confident leaders in an increasingly interconnected world. Our diversity is our strength, and together we can build a future where collaboration transcends borders," she said.
Dr. Agyapong reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to expanding international collaborations, promoting student and faculty exchanges and creating opportunities that position UniMAC as a globally recognised institution of higher learning.
The maiden International Day formed part of UniMAC's broader vision of promoting global engagement and creating an inclusive academic environment where cultural diversity is embraced as a catalyst for innovation, learning and sustainable development.
