Project iSWEST seeks to develop the innovative potential of Ghanaian high school students through STEM education and make them solve real life problems

Project iSWEST (Innovating Solutions with Engineering, Science & Technology) is an annual summer program in Ghana to get high school students to develop innovative solutions to problems in their communities by inspiring them to be creative and then equipping them with the requisite tools, soft and hard - basic science, engineering and technology (SET) - skills. Project iSWEST will be run by “Team

Nsesa” in Accra, the capital of Ghana and will in summer 2014(in August) bring together 20 high schools students. Team Nsesa is a highly motivated group of young Ghanaians effecting change in Ghana by promoting a culture of innovation and problem solving. Nsesa means change in Akan (a native Ghanaian language).The 3 modules of Project iSWEST are:

2- Week Intensive Workshop (6hrs each day: 9am - 4pm, 1hr break)
In the first part of the program, students will be taught the innovation process and then given basic and practical training in electronics, robotics, computer programming, and Arduino programing over two weeks. Students will work in teams on various small projects and have the opportunity to listen to inspiring stories from the members of Team Nsesa. Students will not only be inspired, but will also be equipped with the skills needed to cause impact in various communities.

2-Week Innovation Phase & Project Pitches
In the second part of the program, 4 teams of students will receive funds, and be tasked to develop an innovative and cost efficient solution to a problem they have identified in the community over a two week period using local materials and the skills they obtained from the workshop. Members of Team Nsesa will support and consult with project groups in the process.The climax of the summer program will be the presentation of developed solutions to various problems. High School officials will be invited to the project presentations, along with policy makers and various organizations. Teams will be assessed on the impact, sustainability, technical feasibility and business viability of their projects. The most viable ones will receive funding for further development. The innovation phase gives students the opportunity to put to practice the skills they have developed and be innovators themselves. This process is very novel within the Ghanaian context since most similar programs just focus on inspiring students as well as giving them skills without assisting them to solve real life problems with these skills

iSWEST Team & iSWEST Lab
We will set up 1 iSWEST Team & iSWEST Lab (resourced with Computers, Arduino Kits, Electronic Kits) in one of the high schools after the program so students will continue building skills and developing solutions to problems in their communities. This is one of the most important aspect of the program since most students lack access to tools and equipments. By giving them these tools and equipments, students will be empowered to develop more skills on their own and well solve real life problems in their communities using the tools and equipments. At the core of Project iSWEST is our desire to inspire the youth of our country to believe that they have the capacity to be innovative as well as to empower them to develop solutions to the problems within their communities.

We can't keep calm! Project iSWEST Nsesa Foundation’s 7th annual innovation and career development boot camp kicks off virtually today.

Over the next 3 weeks, the participants will embark on a journey of immense transformation! They will be coached and taught Programming and Innovation by experienced scientists, engineers, and innovators recognized by MIT Technology Review and Nature.

They will build technological solutions to real-world problems around the “ ” and present them to experts at the heart of innovation in Ghana.

Isaac is an entrepreneur, engineer and innovator passionate about leveraging technology to solve some of Africa's most pressing problems.

He leads the team at Sesi Technologies as CEO and Head of Product Development where they are developing affordable technologies to solve problems in the world's food systems with a focus on Africa.

The team at Sesi Tech currently design, develop and manufacture a suite of post-harvest management technologies aimed at helping farmers and agribusinesses reduce losses, maximize productivity and increase their income.

He is a 2019 MIT Technology Review Innovator Under 35 along with the founders of Google and PayPal, and a member of the inaugural class of 50Next, a global list of young innovators shaping the future of gastronomy.

As an international speaker, he has addressed thousands in high level events by United Nations, US government and more. He has also spoken to hundreds of students, researchers and professors in many top universities around the world including MIT, Yale University and University of Florida.

His work has been featured in several prestigious publications and he has had the opportunity to showcase his work to several heads of states including the president and vice president of Ghana, the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Prince Charles of Wales.

His passion for STEM led him to cofound Nsesa Foundation, a non-profit whose vision is to inspire an Innovation revolution in Africa and get young Africans solving problems using science and technology. Our programs have trained hundreds of students globally.

Victor Kumbol is a Ghanaian early-stage neuroscientist and social entrepreneur. Victor obtained an MPhil in Pharmacology in 2016 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and is pursuing a PhD in Medical Neurosciences at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, where his research is focused on uncovering unconventional effects of miRNAs on neuronal physiology.

Beyond neuroscience, Victor is passionate about leveraging technology to impact society. Victor started DIY Labware, a project to train scientists in Ghana to develop their own lab equipment using open science tools. Through DIY Labware, Victor aims to tackle one of the challenges to science in Africa - access to lab equipment.

Victor is also a co-founder of Nsesa Foundation, an education non-profit that runs innovation boot camps in Ghana and online coding courses across Africa.

George Boateng is a Computer Scientist, Engineer, Educator, Social Entrepreneur, and a pioneer of smartphone-based online coding education in Africa.

He is a PhD Candidate at ETH Zurich, Switzerland (focusing on AI/Applied Machine Learning) where he is developing a smartwatch-based machine learning method for multimodal emotion recognition among romantic couples managing chronic diseases. He has 25+ peer-reviewed publications in international conferences and journals.

George is also the President and Cofounder of Nsesa Foundation, an education nonprofit spurring an “Innovation Revolution” in Africa - a movement in which young Africans are building innovative solutions to problems in their communities using STEM via the programs: Project iSWEST, STEM WOW, and SuaCode.

His SuaCode work from 2017 to 2020, has had 3K applicants from 69 countries, accepted 1K students, with a 62% completion rate and alums getting internships, jobs and studying computer science and engineering in top schools e.g., Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, MIT, etc. It has led him to create Kwame, a bilingual AI Teaching Assistant to revolutionize remote education across Africa.

George has been recognized globally with accolades such as a Pioneer as one of the 2021 MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35, 2021 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation Shortlist by the U.K.’s Royal Academy of Engineering and 2019 Education Innovation prize by the African Union.

George has a B.A. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Computer Engineering, and a Business Training Certificate, all from Dartmouth College, U.S. At Dartmouth, he was a Sophomore Science Scholar, Neukom Scholar, E.E. Just STEM Scholar and an E.E. Just Graduate Fellow. He received the following awards at graduation: Neukom Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Research in Computational Science, Ernest Everett Just Award in Mathematics and the Sciences and the Thayer School of Engineering Dean’s Service Award.
