About the Bursary Provider – UCT & Klaus-Jürgen Bathe

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is one of South Africa’s leading academic institutions. Its mission is to develop individuals who embody strong leadership qualities and a commitment to social justice, preparing them to make meaningful contributions in government, business, civil society, and industry across South Africa and the African continent.

The Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Scholarship is awarded annually to exceptional UCT students. The scholarship is named after Professor Klaus-Jürgen Bathe, a distinguished Mechanical Engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is renowned for his work in applied and computational mechanics, including the development of the world-famous ADINA system used in engineering analysis.

Professor Bathe is also the founder of ADINA R & D, Inc., and has authored numerous articles, textbooks, and scholarly publications. He has received prestigious honors from institutions such as MIT, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. A UCT graduate himself (Class of 1967), Professor Bathe was a Gold Medalist in the Faculty of Engineering and has supported the university through scholarship programs for over 20 years.

About the Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Scholarship Programme – Fields Covered

UCT invites applications for the Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Scholarship for the 2026 academic year. The scholarship is open to undergraduate students in any field of study at UCT. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership abilities, and involvement in extracurricular activities, community service, or similar areas.

Coverage and Benefits

The scholarship is valued at R120,000 per year and offers partial funding to cover tuition fees, books, stationery, accommodation, and living expenses.

Selection is based primarily on:

Academic performance
Demonstrated leadership
Commitment to public and community service
While financial need is considered, it is not the main selection criterion. Funding is provided for one academic year and may be renewed for a second year based on academic performance.

The UCT Funding Office will forward eligible applications to Professor Bathe, who plays an active role in selecting scholarship recipients.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Must be a South African citizen
Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at UCT in any of the six faculties

Must have a minimum GPA of 60% and no failed modules
Must have proven leadership experience
Must have participated in extracurricular activities or community service
Must have a total household income of less than R1.2 million per year
Must not be receiving other funding that exceeds the value of this scholarship

Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program 2026/2027 – Now Accepting Applications

Application Deadline: 5 October 2025

South African academics and researchers now have the opportunity to apply for the 2026/2027 Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (SARSP). This prestigious exchange initiative allows professionals from local universities and research institutions to spend between three and nine months conducting advanced research at a recognised academic or research institution in the United States.

The program supports scholars with a strong background in teaching, research, and publication, aiming to boost both individual expertise and institutional development back home. Research placements should begin between 1 August 2026 and 31 March 2027, and all projects must conclude by 31 December 2027.

Who Can Apply – Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this competitive fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Hold a doctoral degree or its equivalent at the time of application.

Ideally have at least three years of university-level teaching experience and a strong record of scholarly output.

Be a South African citizen, or a permanent resident who has lived in South Africa with official status for at least five years. (Note: dual citizens with U.S. nationality are not eligible.)

Be applying to conduct research only – proposals for clinical medical research involving direct patient interaction, dissertation research, or travel for general professional purposes will not be considered.

Be from any academic discipline, excluding clinical medical research.

Have limited or no prior experience in the U.S. and must not have previously received a Fulbright Scholar Award.

Have adequate English communication skills to collaborate with peers and complete the proposed project. TOEFL is not required, but English proficiency may be assessed.

Be in good health; successful candidates will need to submit a completed medical report.

Past applicants who weren’t selected are welcome to reapply, provided they update their proposal, CV, and reference letters.

What the Grant Covers

Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive support package that includes:

A monthly stipend based on the cost of living at the host institution.

Return economy airfare between South Africa and the U.S.

Baggage allowance for return travel.

Professional development support, including funds for books, seminars, or conferences.

A settling-in allowance upon arrival.

Primary health insurance for the duration of the stay.

Visa fees covered by the program.

Note: Laboratory and other institutional fees are not automatically included and may only be funded in rare cases, depending on budget availability.

How to Apply for the Fulbright SARSP

Applications must be submitted online, with all sections of the form completed and supporting documents uploaded via the official platform.

Application requirements include:

A clearly written research proposal, with methodology explained in a way that a non-specialist review panel can understand.

Three confidential letters of reference, uploaded directly by referees through the system (no emailed or posted letters will be accepted).

A Letter of Invitation from a U.S. host institution is highly encouraged, though not mandatory. Applicants without a confirmed host may request assistance with placement.

Avoid nominating your former university (alma mater) as your preferred host. The Fulbright Program will do its best to accommodate placement requests.
