"Make some nooooissse!"

Nope.

That's not your favourite DJ!

That's Ali Bongo. Gabon's ousted president!

I'll never justify any coup, especially with my having experienced wars myself;

I've seen and been through things many of you haven't and probably never will have to even contemplate - so before you spew any jazz on this road, think twice!

I've been wondering for a while now whether Monsieur Bongo ever heard the manifold cries and lamentations, a.k.a. "noise," of his suffering people.

And now he wants "noise" in his favour? What noise? White noise, maybe! Who knows?

Some African misleaders can no longer sleep a wink, I hear. Day and night, they are in a state of terror - and rightly so! Their evil deeds have finally caught up with them! Their day of reckoning is here!

In Romans 13:3-4 (selected portions) it is written: "Would you like to be unafraid of those in authority? Then do what is good, and they will praise you, because they are God's servants working for your own good. But if you do evil, then be afraid of them, because their power to punish is real."

The passage above, interestingly, is about obeying the "legitimate" authorities set up by God over His people (let me not even get into the "legitimacy" of some of these political leeches - these misleaders on our continent - who have employed every impish trick in the book to cleave to power). The people are to be obedient to these leaders, God's chosen rulers, and they are also encouraged to "pay taxes, because the authorities are working for God when they fulfill their duties" (Romans 13:6).

In the democratic context, you could say the people, the hoi polloi, also qualify as "authorities," as they give "their power" to a select few to manage affairs - on their behalf. Just you cast a gaze across the continent, though. Even a cursory look will tell you these blood-sucking misleaders do not give a rat's arse about their people! They heap high taxes upon their people - yet what do they give them in return? Abject misery and grinding poverty!

These misleaders, if they were of the Divine, would be "working for God" by "fulfilling their duties." But, we all know how the story goes. It's like a script of misleadership that they have all studied to the tee! It's like a broken record - everything's a whirr!

African misleaders ought to have learnt, by now, that they cannot take the people for granted forever. But will they? I seriously doubt it!

You can fool some people all the time; what you cannot do is fool all the people all the time.

Changing Generals and rehsuffling military personnel is not going to change a darn thing! It is not the antidote to this martial headwind sweeping across the continent - just as, admittedly, coups aren't the solution either.

With what most of our misleaders are doing, however, they only give impetus to the putschists lurking in the background.

Like hounds, the men in camouflage have smelled blood - and now, they are baying for it every which way we turn.

The die is cast - and there will be hell to pay!

The dark days of the 60s, 70s and 80s are upon us once more - all because of the wanton, unbridled greed of a few!

I pray these misleaders never forget the words of Hosea 8:7,8,10,12,13:

"They have planted the wind and will harvest the whirlwind. The stalks of grain wither and produce nothing to eat. And even if there is any grain, foreigners will eat it. The people of Israel have been swallowed up; they lie among the nations like an old discarded pot. I will now gather them together for judgment. Then they will writhe under the burden of the great king. Even though I gave them all my laws, they act as if those laws don’t apply to them. I will hold my people accountable for their sins, and I will punish them."

Pray, my beloved continent! Pray!

God save our continent! God help our people!

Selah!

DAILY WISDOM NUGGETS:

VENI, VIDI, VICI!

There once was an old farmer who had worked his land for many years. One day, his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbours came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically. “Perhaps,” the farmer replied. The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “What great luck!” the neighbours exclaimed. “Perhaps,” replied the old man. The following day, his son tried riding one of the untamed horses, was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbours again came to commiserate with him on his misfortune. “Perhaps,” was all the farmer would say. The following day, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the leg of the farmer’s son was broken, they passed him by. The neighbours congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out for him. “Perhaps,” yet again, was his only reply…

Does God desert us, do you think, when bad things happen in our lives? Is He only present when things go well? When the storms of life blow and rock the boats of our comfort and faith and expectations, do we take it, then, that our heavenly Father has abandoned us - the same way, even in Jesus' day, when bad things happened to good people it was assumed it was because they had necessarily done some evil?

Good or bad, we all get a taste of life's vicissitudes. A mother of mine was sharing with me, recently, the story of another woman, a very close friend of hers, who lost her beloved son to Covid-19 - a child she was particularly close to. That woman's faith has taken a big hit as a result. I know firsthand what such happenings can do to a person! When my Dad passed when I was just a boy, it was disastrous for my Mom. When, on top of that, my eldest brother kicked the bucket
over a decade ago, my Mom nearly lost it! No parent ever dreams of burying a child of theirs. No!

But what do we do when such things happen anyway? Curse God and die - like Job's wife encouraged him to do? Or, maybe, grieve, share our unhappiness with God, let Him know we don't understand why what happened did - but that we still trust that He's in control of our lives and that all shall be well?

I've had this philosophy and applied it for a long time in my life. It's pretty simple, really: I don't get too excited about anything, good or bad, excellent or horrible, that comes my way. And guess what? That really works for me! Make no mistake: I wholly relish my life, the blessing of my family, the gift of genuine friends, the exquisiteness of the rich talents I am laden with, the joys of my work and all! I am immensely appreciative of it all!

But I refuse to get carried away by the things that occur in my life. I celebrate the positives, yes - but then it's quickly back to the drawing board to plan and work on the next one. When I have a torrid time? Yeah, I take the hit. I feel it, soak it in, let it wash over me, cry if I need to - and then I let it go. Its time is done. Again, I move on - to the next one which could very well be "a pleasant one" or positive happening. Like Helen Keller shares, "When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us."

Life, my friend, has its ups and downs, good and bad, dark clouds and silver linings. Even Jesus, the Christ, wept, hungered, suffered thirst, was accused of being possessed (imagine that!), was rejected by His own people, scourged like the worst of criminals, crowned with thorns (think of the excruciating pain) and even crucified on the Cross (the most ignominious kind of death in his day - and maybe any other age)! And you think your life is that bad?

Look, I get it! We all have those moments where we wonder whether God is actually "with us, still." It's okay to be upset, sometimes. In those moments I often speak to God like I speak to other physical beings I can see. I let Him know "I'm so not cool" with what's happening and that He had better "rouse Himself up and act like He cares." I often later crawl on my knees to pray for forgiveness for my stupidity - the ranting and raving of a very finite being who does not rightly grasp God's ways - one who often gets emotional about little things because He sees not the end from the beginning like God does!

The farmer in today's story could have gone to extremes in celebrating his boons and bemoaning his ill fortune - but he was practically impervious to it all. Bad things? They will definitely come your way in some form. You can choose to take them on the chin or in the crotch! Your choice! Just remember that crying over spilt milk is futile - and that while you're allowed to cry over what deserves to be cried over, not moving into the future because of a past ill is probably the worst fate any man could condemn himself to while still here on earth. Get a move on! You'll win some and lose some! Just make the most of it all and, in the end, you can sit back and smile because you came, you saw and you conquered!

DAILY WISDOM NUGGETS:

THAT ESSENTIAL ELEMENT

Once upon a time, there was a girl who could do anything in the world that she wanted to. All she had to do was choose something and focus. One day, she sat down in front of a blank canvas and began to paint. Every stroke was more perfect than the one before, slowly and gracefully converging to build a flawless masterpiece. When she eventually finished painting, she stared proudly at her work and smiled. It was obvious to the clouds and the stars, who were always watching over her, that she had a gift. She was an artist. And she knew it too. She felt it in every fibre of her being. But a short while after she had finished painting, she got anxious and quickly stood up. She realised that while she had the ability to do anything in the world that she wanted to, she was simply spending her time moving paint around on a piece of canvas. She felt there was so much more in the world to see and do—so many options available to her. And if she ultimately decided to do something else with her life, then all the time she spent painting would be a waste. She thus glanced at her masterpiece one last time and walked out the door into the moonlight. And as she walked, she thought, and then she walked some more. While she was walking, she didn’t notice the clouds and the stars in the sky trying to signal her - because she was preoccupied with an important decision she had to make. She had to choose one thing to do out of all the possibilities in the world. Should she practise medicine, become an architect or teach children? She was utterly stumped. Twenty-five years later, the girl, who was now grown, began to cry. She realised she had been walking for so long, and that over the years she had become so enamoured by everything that she could do—the endless array of possibilities—that she hadn’t done anything meaningful at all. And she learnt, at last, that life isn’t about possibilities—for anything is possible. Life is about making a decision—deciding to do something that moves you. Now the girl, who was no longer a girl, purchased some canvas and paint from a local craft store, drove to a nearby park and began to paint. One stroke gracefully led into the next just as it had so many years ago. And as she smiled, she continued painting through the day and into the night. She had finally made a decision, and there was still some time left to revel in the magic that life is all about.

There is something truly magical about identifying our purpose, here on earth, and living it out. It is in pursuing this that a man, no matter the rewards he gets or doesn't get, thrives and is at his happiest. The big problem, however, is the fact that many of us, like hummingbirds darting from one flower to another, keep talent-hopping and skill-testing that, by the time we come to realise what ought to have been our "first love" and our "chief goal," we are almost done with our lives or may have missed out on a whole lot of what we could have done - for God and humanity!

One of the things that can most effectively point a man to his purpose is what he is passionate about - what drives him. That is why, especially among children, we must observe what they are drawn to and guide them towards those things - in the right ways, of course. This year, let's make it a point to learn this simple but crucial point: success, in any human endeavour, requires concentration, focus, a determination to see done what needs to be done. There's no two ways about that!

As Lee Iacocca shares, "The ability to concentrate and to use your time well is everything!" This year, learn to focus! Focus on those things that will make you become your very best. Let's do that, together, and see whether this year will not be our best - by the time it fully winds down. I wish you focus!

DAILY WISDOM NUGGETS:

NEVER ALONE

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth’s rite of passage? Here's what happens. His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds and leaves him - alone. The youth is required to sit on a tree stump the whole night and not take off the blindfold until the rays of the sun come shining through. He is all by himself. He must not cry out to anyone for help. Once he survives the night, he becomes - a man! He is also not allowed to tell other boys of this experience. Each boy must come into his own manhood. There came the day when it was the turn of a rather gentle Cherokee boy to go through this rite of passage. He was terrified to say the least. He could hear all kinds of noise around him as he sat on the stump on which he'd been left. There were sounds like those of beasts all around him. Some human, even, could hurt him. He was completely at the mercy of everything and everyone! He felt completely lost and alone. The wind blew the grass, creating more frightful sounds. But the boy knew he had to go through the night. It was the only way he could become a man. Others had done it. Well, so could he! He sat stoically there, never removing the blindfold. Finally, after a night of terror, the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he saw his father sitting on the stump next to him. His father had been on the watch - seeing to it that no harm came to him - the entire night!

Though not a fan of English-based football club, Liverpool, as I am a supporter, rather, of the most accomplished side in English football, Manchester United, I cannot but fall on that other club's motto - for the purposes of today's message: You'll Never Walk Alone!

Imagine just how terrified this youth must have been. Those are the same terrors we go through year in and year out. Shall we make it through another year? Will death come for our loved ones? Will our families stay united? Will they fall apart? Will we succeed in our pursuits - academic, financial and others? We mull over all these and, sometimes, the anxiety is so great that we feel like just giving up altogether.

But wait! Just as with this boy who had to show he was ready to be a man, we, too, must show we are ready to reap the harvest God has already given us in 2021. To do that, however, means going through the testing required - showing that we are worthy of those boons. You see, we never walk alone because God is always by our side - just as the boy's father, unknown to him, had been with him throughout what could have been, up to that point in his life, his worst ordeal. But imagine his relief when he realised his old man had been there the whole time!

In 2021, God will be with you the whole time! He will never leave your side! You will never walk alone! But if you fail to trust Him and take off the blindfold of faith, that's where all your troubles will begin. Like the words of that song say, "Trust and obey, For there's no other way to be happy in Jesus - But to trust and obey." Let us, with faith, do whatever God tells us and this year will be one like we have never witnessed before. I wish you faith!

DAILY WISDOM NUGGETS:

JUST A SIP

Once upon a time there was a woman who had been lost in the desert for three whole days without water. Just as she was about to collapse, she saw what appeared to be a lake just a few hundred yards away from her. “Could it be? Or is it just a mirage?” she thought to herself. With the last bit of strength she could muster, she staggered toward the lake and quickly learnt that her prayers had been answered: it was no mirage—it was, indeed a large, spring-fed lake full of fresh water—more fresh water than she could ever drink in her lifetime. Yet while she was literally dying of thirst, she couldn’t bring herself to drink the water. She simply stood by the water’s edge and stared at it. There was a passerby riding on a camel from a nearby desert town who was watching the woman’s bizarre behaviour. He got off his camel, walked up to the thirsty woman and asked, “Why don’t you have a drink, ma’am?” She looked up at the man with an exhausted, distraught expression across her face and tears welling up in her eyes. “I am dying of thirst,” she said, “but there is way too much water here in this lake to drink. No matter what I do, I can’t possibly finish it all.” The passerby smiled, bent down, scooped some water up with his hands, lifted it to the woman’s mouth and said, “Ma’am, your opportunity right now, and as you move forward throughout the rest of your life, is to understand that you don’t have to drink the whole lake to quench your thirst. You can simply take one sip - just one little sip - and then another if you choose. Focus only on the mouthful in front of you, and all your anxiety and fear about the rest will fade away.”

I don't know about you, but I've lined up my resolutions for this year - and I mean to remind myself about them as often as possible so I can keep my eye on the ball. I hit the ground running today by starting immediately with some of them. I mean to work on others in the course of today. It's never too soon, I tell you! Today's anecdote, though, got me thinking about how we sometimes regard the happenings of life - from the standpoint of their complexity and vastness. Like I always say, though, a thick forest, viewed from afar, always appears impenetrable - until you get closer - then you see spaces between the trees by which you can enter it.

If you've not realised this yet, then let me tell you that life is lived a day at a time. Projects are achieved a task at a time. Even children are usually birthed one at a time. The French have a saying: "Petit à petit l'oiseau fait son nid." Taken literally, this means:" Little by little, the bird builds its nest." Have you ever observed a bird building its nest? Depending on the type of bird and the weight of its chicks, it would go for different elements. By and large, though, twigs, grass, mud and sometimes even feathers, are used. It doesn't come together all at once, however. The bald eagle, for example, is said to spend up to 3 whole months constructing a life-long nest that will be touched up on every year or so.

My point? Like with the woman in today's anecdote, all we need, really, is a little "sip of life" at a time. We cannot do it all at once. That would wear us beyond exhaustion and likely take our lives. What we need to do is tackle assiduously what must be done every day and leave tomorrow's cares to tomorrow. It is in the ledger of our daily work, you see, that our lives are summed up. Life doesn't happen all at once, just as Rome was not raised up in just a day. Just a bit at a time, depending on what you're capable of, is what God requires of us. Nothing more! Let's make 2021 count, but let's not forget to take it all day by day - one sip at a time. God bless you!

DAILY WISDOM NUGGETS:

THE MOMENT OF TRUTH

One day, Lord Indra got upset with farmers and declared a 12-year drought. There would be no rain and farmers would not be able to reap crops. The farmers begged Lord Indra for mercy, and he said it would rain if Lord Shiva played his damru. Secretly, he requested Shiva not to give in to the farmers’ pleas. When the farmers approached Lord Shiva, he stated that he wouldn’t play the damru for the next twelve years. The farmers had no choice but to wait. One farmer, however, kept digging, treating the soil, and sowing seeds. Other farmers laughed at him. After three years, they asked him, “Why do you waste your time and energy when you know it won’t rain for the next nine years?” “I know we cannot harvest crops,” the farmer said. “But if I sit around, I’ll forget the process of growing crops. I must keep practising so I’m fit to produce crops the moment it rains.” When the goddess Parvati heard this, she was pleased. She shared it with her husband, Lord Shiva, and said, “You might also forget playing the damru after twelve years.” The innocent Lord Shiva tried to play the damru to check whether he still remembered how to do so. The result was immediate rain. The farmer who regularly tilled his field got rewarded with a bounty of crops while the others scampered about to dig their fields and search for seeds to sow.

We all have our moments of truth - many of them, in fact, in the course of our lives. Some, though, are of much greater significance than others and may never recur - for us to have second chances. Our God is, indeed, a God of second chances; but some opportunities are once-in-a-lifetime occurrences that, like lightning, do not repeat themselves!

Contemplate the tenacity of this exemplary farmer. He knew the rains wouldn't come - yet he kept hoping against hope and preparing, long ahead of time, for when it would. What a spirit of positivity! That is the kind of thinking we need as we get ready to enter 2021! A lack of practice and diligence will cause your muscles, physical, mental and even spiritual to atrophy! Now, you don't want that, do you?

Many people, faced with circumstances like those this farmer experienced, would grow anxious and, likely, throw in the towel - just give up! But not he! He refused to budge. He gave himself an excuse to keep on trucking rather than just let everything slide - like the others did. When preparation meets opportunity, great things happen. But when your moment of truth comes, will you be ready to prove your mettle? That's something crucial for you to ponder ahead of the next year which is just some hours away now.

Finally, while I know this year has been tough, the coming year doesn't promise anything less difficult. That ought to prompt us to gird our loins and work our hardest - even as we pray and hope for the best. Let us also learn to consider the brighter side of things. We are often so focused on the bad - like Covid-19 in 2020 and how it blighted the entire year - that we forget about all the other good things: life, that accident that didn't take our lives, good health, the new job, that completed degree, our spiritual advancement, peace in our families and countries... The list goes on and on! As we do all the things we plan on doing and as we prepare ourselves for those moments of truth in 2021, let us never forget to be thankful - for God loves the one who is thankful, even in small things - and to such He gives much more!

DAILY WISDOM NUGGETS:

WHEN TO DO WHAT

During the war-time blitz on London, Archbishop Heenan visited an old lady to take her to safety away from her house. "Come on, mother," he urged as the old lady fussed about. "Let's get out of here as quickly as possible." "But Father," she said, "I am looking for my teeth." "Teeth!" exclaimed Father John (as he was then widely known). "You don't need teeth now. The Germans are not dropping sandwiches."

Another year beckons. I reckon we have quite a lot to chew on - as we plod on into yet another 365 days and contemplate what the coming year could come along with. Of course, some of what the coming year will be accompanied by is already known to us: Covid-19 and its concomitant effects on everything as we know it... In the impending year we also shall have many opportunities, some of them glorious, to achieve some of the things we've dreamt of for practically forever. Just as with this fast-passing year, we shall, in the coming one, have our fair share of ups and downs, good and bad, pleasant and unpleasant. But what the coming year will shape up to be will also be largely dependent on our approach to it - how we live and act in it.

I shared today's anecdote because we are all accustomed, more often than not, to do like the old lady did - be overly concerned about things that don't really matter while paying little attention to the things that actually do matter. Our spiritual lives and our connectedness to God and obedience to His will is an apt example! Now, that's something practically all of us need to work at in the year to come. But is that even a priority for you? Has it even made it on your list of resolutions or plans? How about family? We slave away at work and spend so little time with the people we claim to love. We feel money does the trick. The truth is, it doesn't. Money is important. I wholly agree! But love and a sense of belonging cannot be bought! If you don't come to this realisation soon enough, you just might end up laughing at the wrong side of your mouth in 2021!

In the coming year let us also learn to spend time with ourselves more - ponder our lives, do a lot more introspection and allow our bodies to regenerate. In this crazed age of social media where everyone is farming for likes, we tend to forget to slow down and just breathe. We live on social media for a lot of people whom we don't even know. But God, who knows us all too well, sees our self-deceit. Starting from now and in the coming year, He says: "Just be yourself. Let me be your Anchor. Let me help you focus on the right things that will bring you to where I wish you to be." The year 2021, you see, will be great for some and terrible for others - unfortunately! Just as 2020, in which, despite all its terrors, some people have come to call this their best year in decades while many others languish, so the coming year, too, will be.

But here's the good part: through our planning and actions, we can well determine which category we shall fall into - starting from right now. Build your life on the best Foundation Who is God! Break away from negative relationships. Take the right risks. Work assiduously! Save crazily! Determine to be happy. If you do these things, focusing on the positive rather than the negative and committing to making the year to come a much better one, all of nature will conspire to make your dreams come true. Dreaming, of course, without working won't do; as you dream, you must get up and do - so thoughts and reality shall merge.

Finally, when life is dropping its bombs on you, don't forget to take cover in the Lord rather than think of the mundane - like dentures - when it is not sandwiches being dropped on top of you. Make the right choices and let us, together, make 2021 a glorious year - for God and all humanity!

DAILY WISDOM NUGGETS:

FIRST THINGS FIRST!

Who and what come first in your life? For many of us, it is easy to say, "God comes first for me - and then family is next." A critical look at our relationship with God and our dealings with our family members, however, quickly reveals that those things we say often are no more than mere talk.

If we love God the way we claim, then how come we are so averse to listening to what He clearly shows us is His will for our lives? If we love our brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, cousins and other relatives as much as we do, then why do we seemingly make it our business to cause them grief - to make them feel their lives would have been better of without us?

As that saying goes, "Your priorities are your character." Whether you recognise this or not, whatever you truly have inside of you - that which is what concerns you the most - is what you will commit to. It is really that simple!

At some point or other, we all have to prioritise; and when we fail to prioritise the right things, we only open ourselves up to disaster. It is like a critically ill person who, instead of taking his or her medication, decides to throw caution to the wind and gorge on the very thing that landed him or her in that sickly state in the first place. Crazy, right? But we all do this! That is precisely what we do when we fail to put first things first.

I remember reading a story (and this is just a story), a long time ago, about a man who opened his car door at the wrong time - just when an oncoming car approached. The said car sped past, ripping off his car's door - together with his entire left arm. In anguish the man screamed, "My sports car! My beautiful Jaguar! And my beloved Rolex!" This man, apparently, wasn't bothered about his arm that had been ripped off together with the car's door!

That, indeed, should have been more important to him than all the cars in the world put together and every last Rolex ever made. But in that moment, he did not appear to recognise that. And that is the whole point! If we looked carefully, we should all realise that in some ways, big or small, we are very much like the owner of that sports car whom we might even conveniently call insane - to some extent!

Take, for example, how we treat our phones nowadays - how we cannot do without them. Juxtapose that with how we treat our Bibles. Do we act as though we couldn't do without God's word? So, you see, we all also are insane through how we live and act! We give so much importance to that which is fleeting, transient, fading away - while we act indifferently towards many crucial things like our family, health and our spiritual lives - which will be with us for a long time and have long-term implications for our lives. In fact, in the case of our spiritual lives, a good one could culminate in eternal bliss while a bad one could lead us to eternal anguish. All these, however, are choices that are left to us to make - and they reflect on what and whom we prioritise.

As we enter yet another year, we all need to take some time to sit back and take a second look at our lives - to reflect on who we are and what we have become - to set our priorities aright - before the unexpected happens.

"WHAT YOU PRIORITISE DEFINES YOUR LIFE." -BossBabe
