GNAD urges government to legalise sign language
The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has called on the government to legalise sign language in the perspective to bridge the communication gap between the deaf and the rest of the society.
The Association says sign language is unique just as any other Ghanaian language like Ga, Twi or Ewe, hence the need to accord it a lingual and facilitate its usage for easy communication among the deaf and their other counterparts.
George Pinto, a sign language interpreter of the Association indicated that with that pupils will start studying Ghanaian sign language in schools as they do for other local languages when Parliament successfully enact this law.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Thursday, on the celebration of the International Day of sign languages, he said: “by so doing, we will get majority of Ghanaians communicating with deaf people basically.”
“Today’s programme forms part of an awareness-raising, we are calling on government to back the Ghanaian sign language with law. We want the legal recognition of the Ghanaian sign language to become one of the national languages and if this is done then basic schools will start learning it just like they learn Ewe, Akan, Ga,” he said.
He entreated Ghanaians to accept sign language as they do for other spoken languages in the country. For him, that will help integrate the deaf into public services and society.
Meanwhile, a sign language lecturer, Mr Emmanuel Addo Asare, disclosed that prospective individuals request for his teaching only in instances when they realize that having knowledge in sign language will be advantageous for a particular purpose.
“My observation has been that, someone will approach you to learn sign language basically because the person has an interest in using sign language for a purpose but without that it is rare. So somebody will come to you to learn because the person is going to disability program and will need it that is why he or

Dear Complaints,
I am very grateful for your messages about "I, Isaac Kwaku Essien do business with Sign language but does not support Deaf People"
Fair enough, I wish to take some few minutes to comment on this because the messages in my inbox are becoming many, not from Deaf people but from hearing friends, by the way.
First of all, I would like you to understand that, "I do not do business with Sign Language, but I promote Deaf Culture with Sign Language as an Interpreter".
I have dedicated myself for Deaf Community Empowerment since 2015 and I do that in my own little-big ways.
I am a hearer who speaks Sign Language, I can not advocate for Deaf rights without been able to sign, therefore my approach to educate people about the Deaf culture and the teaching of Sign Language at the is not one I call business, for we do not charge our learners. (I stand for corrections, if any of our past student was charged for learning Sign Language from us, comment below)
Since the birth of our , we have had 5 batches of students.
To the best of my knowledge, 3SL has not charged any of our student tuition.
Note: The GHS 350 we contribute to 3SL as learners is for souvenirs, books, transportation for our Deaf Community Tour Project and staging. (this is not )
Secondly, "I have also received messages about not supporting Deaf people in need in this time of global crisis."
Though this is not important to comment on to the public, I see the need to share it anyways, we have supported many Deaf people in our capacity this time than in any other time in the past, but for you to understand, we at 3SL do not share what we do for our Deaf Community online on social (as I would do for my NGO Spoorlife Foundation) because we believe Deafness is not a challenge, and therefore see no need to show the world how we give "1 bag of rice" to our Deaf fellow in need as support.
Our is for Deaf people, therefore, we don't count Deaf people as beneficiaries of services, rather, hearing people are our beneficiaries that's why almost every thing you read about us online is about what the Deaf is giving to the hearing community by Deaf people.
We've not done it before and we will not do it now or in the future. We ain't part of the crowd, we have our own way of describing Deafness and content to share.
(I DON'T HAVE TO POST PICTURES OF ME GIVING MONEY TO A DEAF FELLOW BEFORE YOU BELIEVE WE ARE SERVING OUR COMMUNITY).
Thirdly, some few people showed DISAPPOINTMENT in our for not sending out educational videos in sign language for the Deaf Community.
As a multifaceted entrepreneur, I understand the needs of time and deem it not important to attach our logos to educational contents in times like this.
We shared videos and blog articles to our Deaf Community but none did we attach our logos or brand because informing people about a pandemic such as should not be connected to marketing and sales of services especially with an organization advocating and fighting for the rights of Deaf people in continental Africa.
These are my comments to 3/6 questions I have gathered from hearing people in my network about "not attending to Deaf people" during .
But note, our Deaf Community in the domains of the 3sl Academy are not complaining about these. [that should tell you what we are doing in our closets].
I will share the other 3 in my next post, comment below, let me know your thoughts.
