The Battle of Mu’tah is one of the most emotional and significant events in Islamic history.
In 8 AH, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army of around 3,000 companions to the region of Mu’tah (present-day Jordan). The reason was that a Muslim envoy had been unjustly killed, which was considered a serious violation of treaty and international conduct.
The leadership of the army was assigned in sequence to three noble companions:
Zayd ibn Harithah
Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib
Abdullah ibn Rawahah
The Prophet ﷺ instructed that if one commander was martyred, the next would take leadership.
When the Muslim army arrived, they found themselves facing the massive forces of the Romans and their allies. The Muslims were vastly outnumbered, but their faith was stronger than mountains.
First, Zayd ibn Harithah fought bravely until he was martyred. He dismounted from his horse and continued fighting so no one would think he was retreating. He held the banner of Islam firmly in his hands. When the enemy struck and cut off his right hand, he immediately took the flag with his left. Then his left hand was cut off as well.
Yet even then, he did not let the banner fall.
He held it tightly against his chest and body until he was finally martyred from countless wounds.
While sitting in Madinah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed by Allah about what was happening on the battlefield. He told the companions that Zayd had been martyred, then Ja‘far, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah.
The Prophet ﷺ also said that Allah had granted Ja‘far two wings in Paradise with which he flies. Because of this, he became known as “Ja‘far at-Tayyar” — Ja‘far, the Flyer.
The story of Mu’tah is not just history; it is a silent inspiration for life itself.
Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib teaches us:
How strong a person can become when they truly love their faith.
Even after losing both hands, he never let go of the banner.
Because to him, the flag was not merely cloth — it represented truth, responsibility, and principles.
> Whatever your responsibility is, do not abandon it halfway.
When pressure comes, do not break — stay strong.
Never compromise on truth and principles.
When the goal is great, the hardship feels small.
In life, we often stop because of small difficulties. But the one who holds firmly to their beliefs is never truly defeated.
The life of Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib carries a timeless message for us all: Standing firm upon the truth is the real strength.
