Does a newborn baby need a pillow? No — here's why 🚫🛏️

If you've ever wondered whether your baby needs a pillow — the answer is no.

Here's why 👇

1️⃣ Risk of suffocation & SIDS – Pillows can block a baby's airway and increase the risk of SIDS.

2️⃣ Their spine is straight – Newborns don't need head or neck support like adults do. Flat on a firm mattress is safest.

3️⃣ Official guidelines – The AAP, CDC, WHO, and NHS all say: No pillows, blankets, or soft toys in the sleep area for the first 12 months.

4️⃣ A bare crib is safest – Firm mattress + fitted sheet. Nothing else.

5️⃣ When can they have one? – After 12 months. Some experts recommend waiting until age 2.

👶 1–2 months – Follows moving objects and faces. Vision still very blurry.

👶 3–4 months – Sees colour, tracks 180°, makes eye contact.

👶 5–6 months – Both eyes work together. Tells shades of red, blue, and yellow apart.

👶 8–12 months – Near adult vision. Depth perception + hand-eye coordination.

Your baby isn't born with perfect vision — it develops over time. Here's what they see at each stage:

1️⃣ 0–2 weeks: Blurry black and white. They see light, shadows, and shapes 20–35 cm away.

2️⃣ 1–2 months: Starting to follow faces and moving objects. Vision still very blurry.

3️⃣ 3–4 months: Seeing colour, tracking 180°, and making eye contact.

4️⃣ 5–6 months: Both eyes work together. Distinguishing shades of red, blue, and yellow.

5️⃣ 8–12 months: Near adult-like vision. Depth perception, small objects, and hand-eye coordination.
