Artists of Ghana are doing their part to try to combat the wasteful global “fast fashion problem”. Which is a huge problem in our worldly culture. We buy more than we need, we donate… goodwill, salvation army etc sells off the “best” and ship off to Ghana and other places, 150lb bags of the “everything they don’t sell” from all over the world,… what they can’t sell, those folks are then supposed to pay to dump…folks who have not much money to begin with.
-
So does it end up in landfills? Some. But Many end up in the ocean and other random places. This is everyone’s problem.. not just Ghanas.
We have been visiting Many artists, and co-ops who are trying to do their part in up-cycling…they can only make a tiny dent in this global problem.

I wish everyone could see the Kantamanto used clothing market. It would change you in ways you can’t imagine. the market had enough clothes to dress everyone in the U.S. and then some….it was a massive market. The video is just one tiny part of it.
-
There is so much more I could say about this but there are not enough spaces for the post to do so.

The Revival, gathers many clothing items that are unsalable. Torn and dirty jeans, plain tshirts, winter coats… yes! The world sends them winter coats… to a HOT country.. where revival turns it into artistic clothing, hand bags, screen prints tshirts, shopping bags, rugs, or shreds them into fibers to make paper… realize each of these groups are under 20 people… working hard to make the unusable into something that won’t end up in a landfill.

@gahmichael searches for clothing to make portraits.
Tei Huagie uses metal, tires, and other materials for his sculpture and paintings.

Tomorrow we will visit @kokrobitey.institute a residential learning center committed to sustainable development by exploring traditional knowledge systems as they pertain to sustainability, education, resourceful design and social entrepreneurship.

I wish everyone could come to see and learn about the life of that shirt you donate, and the life it leads once it leaves your hands…
It has been a powerful, humbling, & thoughtful, day in Ghana❤️
