A MASTERCLASS ON HOW LEARNING AND THE BRAIN WORKS

We are taught how to do everything thing but we are not taught how to study but we expect to do well in our academics. Some people are just gifted so they don't need to be taught how to study. They cannot relate with for example failing exams. That skill is called cognitive skill. It has to do with reasoning, thinking, problem-solving and understanding

According to brain science there are 7 more skills we humans show off in our life time.

1. Cognitive Skills – Thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, understanding.

2. Motor Skills – Physical movement and coordination (e.g., writing, walking, driving).

3. Affective (Emotional) Skills – Managing emotions, values, and attitudes (e.g., empathy, motivation).

4. Social/Interpersonal Skills – Communicating and interacting with others (e.g., teamwork, conflict resolution).

5. Perceptual Skills – Interpreting sensory information (e.g., visual-spatial awareness, pattern recognition).

6. Metacognitive Skills – Thinking about your own thinking (e.g., planning, monitoring, self-evaluating).

7. Linguistic (Language) Skills – Using and understanding language (e.g., speaking, reading, writing).

8. Executive Function Skills – Managing tasks and mental control (e.g., working memory, self-control, time management).

You don't only need cognitive skills to be good academically. You should be able to balance all these 7 to your advantage.

Why are we not taught this in school?
Because we didnʼt ask.

How will football players win the game if they know the rules of the game?

How will students enjoy learning learning if they don't know how the brain and learning works?

Boost your memory and retain everything you learn

1. Teach what you learn to someone outside your academic field

When you teach, you’re forced to organise your thoughts, simplify complex ideas, and identify any gaps in your understanding.

2. Visualize what you read.

The brain processes visuals 60,000 times faster than text.

3. Sleep immediately after a long study session.

During deep sleep, your brain strengthens and organises new neural connections formed during the day. It’s like hitting “Save” on everything you’ve studied.

4. Make it emotional

If a fact or concept is tied to an emotional response, your brain flags it as important. That’s why you remember a passionate story more than a dry textbook definition. If you can make that definition emotional too, it will be a passionate story you cannot forget.

How to be a master at the game of life before leaving school

1. Get out of your comfort zone. Have an impossible goal.

2. Practice going first.In doing so, you will build confident and have a leadership mindset.

3. Be of value to others. Creating value for others is the best way to make yourself successful.

4. Exceed expectations on purpose. Do what someone doesn't expect someone at your age to do. It should be something you have mastered.
