WHAT IS STIMMING? LETโ€™S TALK ABOUT IT ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’™

You may have seen a child flap their hands, rock back and forth, repeat sounds, or focus deeply on certain movements โ€” this is called stimming (self-stimulatory behavior).

โœจ Stimming is a natural and important way many children, especially those with autism, regulate their emotions and sensory experiences.

It can help a child:
๐Ÿ”น Calm down when overwhelmed
๐Ÿ”น Express excitement or joy
๐Ÿ”น Focus and process information
๐Ÿ”น Cope with anxiety or sensory overload

๐Ÿ’ก Common examples include hand flapping, spinning, humming, repeating words, or tapping objects.

๐Ÿšซ Stimming is not โ€œbad behavior.โ€
Itโ€™s a form of communication and self-regulation. Instead of stopping it, we should understand the reason behind it and provide safe, supportive alternatives if needed.

At Bright Steps International School, we believe in accepting, understanding, and supporting every childโ€™s unique way of experiencing the world. ๐Ÿ’™

AUTISM AWARENESS IN EVERY LANGUAGE ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’™

Understanding autism should never be limited by language โ€” because awareness is for everyone.

In this video, one of our dedicated team members at Bright Steps International School explains what Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is in Hausa, helping us reach and educate even more families across our communities.

โœจ Autism is a developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction โ€” and early understanding leads to early support.

By sharing this message in Hausa, we are:
๐Ÿ”น Breaking language barriers
๐Ÿ”น Reaching more parents and caregivers
๐Ÿ”น Promoting early detection and intervention
๐Ÿ”น Building a more inclusive and informed society

๐Ÿ“ From East Legon to communities far beyond, our mission remains the same โ€” to ensure every child is understood, supported, and given the opportunity to thrive.

๐Ÿ’™ Awareness grows when everyone understands โ€” in every language, in every community.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH SPEECH DELAYS STARTS WITH YOU ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

When a child is experiencing speech or language delay, itโ€™s natural for parents to want to help โ€” but sometimes, the way we communicate can either support or unintentionally slow down their progress.

The truth is, children learn language best through simple, consistent, and pressure-free interactions. Small changes at home can lead to powerful improvements over time. โœจ

Here are 4 important things to STOP doing โ€” and what to do instead:

๐Ÿ”น 1. Shift from structured play to open-ended play
Avoid overly structured activities all the time. Instead, encourage open-ended play like blocks, drawing, pretend play, or storytelling. These create natural opportunities for children to explore, express themselves, and use language freely.

๐Ÿ”น 2. Comment more, question less
Constantly asking questions like โ€œWhat is this?โ€ or โ€œSay thisโ€ can feel like pressure. Instead, model language by commenting:
๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œYouโ€™re building a big tower!โ€
๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œThatโ€™s a red car!โ€
This helps children learn words in a relaxed, meaningful way.

๐Ÿ”น 3. Keep communication simple and clear
Using long or complex sentences can overwhelm a child with speech delay. Focus on short, clear phrases they can easily understand and imitate.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Instead of โ€œCan you please bring me the blue cup from the table?โ€
Say: โ€œBring cupโ€ or โ€œBlue cup.โ€

๐Ÿ”น 4. Build on what your child says
Every attempt to communicate is important. If your child says one word, expand it gently:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Child: โ€œBallโ€
๐Ÿ‘‰ You: โ€œBig ball!โ€ or โ€œThrow ball!โ€
This encourages language growth step by step.

๐Ÿ’ก Remember:
โœ”๏ธ Every child develops at their own pace
โœ”๏ธ Consistency is more important than perfection
โœ”๏ธ A calm, supportive environment builds confidence and communication

If you notice your child is not speaking as expected, struggling to communicate, or losing words they once used โ€” donโ€™t wait. Early support can significantly improve their speech, social skills, and overall development.

At Bright Steps International School, we are dedicated to helping children reach their full potential through early intervention and specialized support. ๐Ÿ’™

AUTISM IS NOT A LIMITATION โ€” ITโ€™S A DIFFERENT KIND OF STRENGTH ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’™

Letโ€™s change the narrative.

Autism is often misunderstood, but beyond the challenges, there are beautiful strengths and unique abilities that deserve to be seen, celebrated, and supported. โœจ

Here are just a few benefits of autism you might not know:
๐Ÿ”น Deep focus โ€” the ability to concentrate intensely on tasks
๐Ÿ”น Honesty โ€” genuine, direct, and sincere communication
๐Ÿ”น Attention to detail โ€” noticing things others may miss
๐Ÿ”น Unique thinking โ€” creative, innovative, and outside-the-box ideas
๐Ÿ”น Strong sense of fairness โ€” a deep understanding of right and wrong

Every child is different, and every mind is powerful in its own way. ๐Ÿ’™

At Bright Steps International School, we believe in nurturing these strengths, supporting every childโ€™s journey, and creating an environment where neurodiversity is embraced, not judged.

๐Ÿ“ Located in East Legon

๐Ÿ’™ Letโ€™s move from awareness to acceptanceโ€ฆ and from acceptance to celebration.

๐Ÿ“ฒ Share this to help change perspectives and spread positivity about autism.

AUTISM SUPPORT STARTS AT HOME ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’™

Every child deserves understanding, patience, and the right support to thrive โ€” and it often begins right at home.

If youโ€™re raising or supporting a child with autism, these simple but powerful strategies can make a world of difference in their daily growth and development. โœจ

Here are 5 practical ways to support a child with autism:
๐Ÿ”น Create a predictable routine to help them feel safe and secure
๐Ÿ”น Use clear & simple communication they can easily understand
๐Ÿ”น Encourage their interests and play to build confidence and joy
๐Ÿ”น Break tasks into small, manageable steps
๐Ÿ”น Provide consistent support and positive feedback

These small, intentional actions can help improve communication, reduce anxiety, and support independence over time.

๐Ÿ’™ Remember: every child is unique, and progress looks different for everyone โ€” patience, love, and consistency go a long way.

If you have concerns about your childโ€™s development, donโ€™t wait โ€” early support can make all the difference. Join us for our FREE Autism Screening at East Legon on 24th April, 2026.
