International Students: One of Britain's Greatest Exports

When people think about British exports they often think about financial services, pharmaceuticals, engineering or whisky.

I think they should also think about education.

International students contribute far more than tuition fees.
They rent accommodation.
They use public transport.
They shop locally.
Their families visit.
They support thousands of jobs across the country.
The economic contribution is well documented.

But I believe the bigger story is one that is much harder to measure.

Every international student who returns home takes a little of Britain with them.

Sometimes they become doctors.
Sometimes engineers.
Sometimes teachers.
Sometimes ministers or presidents.
Many remain connected to friends they made during their studies.

Some return to invest.
Others encourage the next generation to study here.
That is soft power in its most positive form.
As someone who has worked with international students for many years, I have seen friendships develop between people from countries that rarely meet outside a university campus.

Education quietly builds understanding in ways that politics often cannot.

That is why I become concerned whenever international students are discussed simply as numbers within migration statistics.

They are much more than that.
They are ambassadors.
They are future business leaders.
They are researchers.
They are innovators.
They are lifelong friends of Britain.

Our universities have earned a global reputation over many generations.
Protecting that reputation should not simply be about attracting more students.

It should be about recognising that international education remains one of Britain's greatest success stories and one of our most valuable contributions to the world.

Bill Gates' reflections on Rwanda are well worth reading.

Having visited Rwanda four times, three times on university business and once to trek with the mountain gorillas, I have watched with admiration how this remarkable country has rebuilt itself following one of the darkest chapters in modern history. The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi devastated Rwanda, yet in just three decades the country has made extraordinary progress in healthcare, education, infrastructure and public administration.

Bill Gates highlights the dramatic improvements in maternal and child health. Those achievements did not happen by accident. They reflect long term investment, political commitment, effective institutions and a determination to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

Whenever I visit Rwanda, I cannot help thinking of Singapore. Both are relatively small countries that have demonstrated how strong leadership, long term planning and investment in people can transform national fortunes.

It also raises an important question for the rest of Sub Saharan Africa. Botswana has shown what good governance and prudent management of natural resources can achieve. Why have so few countries been able to follow similar paths? Africa is blessed with immense natural and human resources, yet too often weak institutions, corruption and short term political interests have limited the opportunities available to millions of people.

There are, of course, many positive exceptions and encouraging stories emerging across the continent. Rwanda is one of the strongest examples that sustained progress is possible when leadership, accountability and investment in people come together.
