The University will host the inaugural Ghana Higher Education Summit on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at the Cedi Conference Centre. The Summit will bring together university leaders, policymakers, industry representatives, development partners, alumni and other stakeholders to deliberate on the future of higher education financing in Ghana.

Organised under the theme, β€œUniversities at Crossroads: Charting Sustainable Funding Pathways for Inclusive Higher Education,” the Summit seeks to provide a national platform to explore innovative, sustainable and inclusive funding pathways that will strengthen teaching, research and institutional resilience within Ghanaian universities.

The programme will be chaired by Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, with H.E. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, serving as the Special Guest of Honour. The keynote address will be delivered by Emeritus Professor Ernest Aryeetey, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana.

Tomorrow, Prof. Codjoe takes the stage for his Inaugural Lecture at the Great Hall.

His lecture will explore the connections between climate change, indigenous knowledge and health, drawing on knowledge that communities have used for generations to understand changes in their environment and respond to threats to their wellbeing.

Members of the University community and the general public are invited to join us as Prof. Codjoe reflects on what the past can teach us about building healthier and more climate-resilient communities.

Climate change is changing the way we live, grow food and respond to health challenges. But long before modern forecasting systems, communities relied on close observations of nature to make sense of changing seasons and anticipate what lay ahead.

In his inaugural lecture, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe will revisit some of these knowledge systems and examine what they can teach us about climate, health and adaptation today.

From traditional signs used to anticipate rainfall to local understandings of disease and wellbeing, the lecture will bring together knowledge from the past and questions facing communities.

Ten doctoral scholars supported by the Lisa Maskell Fellowship have graduated with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees during the University of Ghana’s July 2026 Congregation Ceremonies.

The graduating scholars, drawn from Cohorts 1 and 2 of the fellowship scheme, represent a diverse group of emerging researchers from across sub-Saharan Africa. The cohort comprises seven international fellows and three Ghanaian fellows from the Departments of History (six), Political Science (two), Archaeology and Heritage Studies (one) and the Institute of African Studies (one).

The Principal Investigators of the Lisa Maskell Fellowship project at the University of Ghana, Prof. Kwame Offei and Prof. S. Agyei-Mensah, congratulated the graduates and commended their dedication, rigorous research contributions and resilience throughout their doctoral training.

The Lisa Maskell Fellowship was introduced at the University of Ghana in 2019 as part of an initiative established in 2014 by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, Germany. Named in honour of the Foundation’s founder, the programme is one of the largest international funding initiatives for doctoral students in the Foundation’s history.

What can earlier forms of environmental knowledge teach us about responding to today’s climate and health challenges?

During his inaugural lecture, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe will take us on a journey through time, bringing to the fore how communities have long observed and interpreted their natural environment to understand seasonal changes, anticipate weather patterns and protect their livelihoods and health.

From reading cloud formations and moon phases to observing bird movements, frog sounds, ant behaviour, sea conditions and fish harvests, these forms of indigenous knowledge offer valuable lessons for contemporary climate monitoring, disease prevention and health planning.

Prof. Codjoe will explore how insights from the past can complement scientific knowledge and help build more resilient communities and health systems.
