*A Must Read For All School Owners!*

A few days ago I was able to have a chat with a senior citizen who once had a thriving school, one of the best schools in the late '90s to early '20s. His school is no longer in existence as it folded a few years ago.

He shared with me his journey and experience in school business.

It was quite emotional listening to him.

He shared every of his experience ranging from the inception of his school to when things went south.

Believe me, it was worth listening to him.

From everything he narrated to me, I can summarize his journey in a few stages.

According to him, there are four stages you'll experience as you go on in school business.

The first stage.

This is the inception stage, the struggling stage, the period that is full of uncertainties, fears, and challenges.

A period when your vision is tested.

This period requires your time, presence, and commitment to make things work.

Not many schools survive this stage. Once you get over this stage, you are on your way to success.

The second stage.

This is the stage things start improving. It is the stage when things balance up, revenue generated takes care of staff salaries and other school expenses.

Sometimes, small or huge profits are made.

Funnily majority of schools remain and operate at this level.

They stay content without exploring further.

According to him, all you should do at this stage is to reinvest your profit back into the school. Put in place more structures and more facilities as your profit will permit you.

This stage will launch you to the next stage.

The third stage.

This is the breakthrough and booming stage. This is a period of rapid growth and population surge.

It is the stage where money is no longer an issue to you. It is simply the ripping stage.

At this stage, you can afford to go on vacation anywhere in the world and spend money on luxuries.

However, he said. "This is the most dangerous stage, if you are not careful, your fame will ruin you". This is a stage you need to be watchful.

According to him;

You should avoid treating your parents with neglect because you feel you have arrived.

Avoid unnecessarily increase in school fees and other levies because you feel everyone can pay.

Never ignore your competitors and competition.

Don't forget to give back to the community that hosts you.

Avoid unplanned expansion. Don't rush into opening new branches without having a well-detailed plan.

The final stage.

This is the stage you start working on a succession plan. You can't remain manager forever.

You'll need to step aside and bring in someone on board, a younger person to succeed you.

As you bring the person onboard, you allow the person to manage the school while you are still strong and active. It could be your child or anyone you feel will do a better job.

This will enable you to monitor, guide correct and mentor the person before you finally take a bow.

Once you get it right at this stage, you have succeeded in securing the business for the future generation.

You can then relax and watch things happen or go into other businesses.

Don't wait until you are too weak, sick, or dead to hand it over.

Why did your school fold? I questioned him.

He told me that he got it wrong at the final stage.

He wasn't able to choose and mentor his successor before traveling out of the country where he spent five years. His succession plan was not well thought out, he left the school for his children unprepared and within a space of five years, things were messed up.

When he came back, he tried to revamp but other schools have sprung up making the competition tougher. He struggled but ended up packing up. He sold some of his assets and moved into the estate business.

Honestly, it was a wonderful time with him.

Hope you learned something.

To your success!

Copied.
