To master the "Theory of Driving," you have to break the process down into three distinct phases: Pre-Drive, Moving, and Stopping. Whether you are in a manual or an automatic, the sequence remains the foundation of road safety.
๐ ๏ธ Phase 1: The Pre-Drive Setup (DSSSM)
Before you even turn the engine on, follow this acronym to ensure you are in the optimal "Command Position."
D - Doors: Ensure all doors are fully closed and locked.
S - Seat: Adjust your seat so your professional "driving stance" allows your knees to be slightly bent when the pedals are fully depressed.
S - Steering: Your wrists should be able to rest on top of the steering wheel without your back leaving the seat.
S - Seatbelt: Fasten your seatbelt and ensure all passengers have done the same.
M - Mirrors: Adjust your center and Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVMs) to minimize blind spots.
๐ฆ Phase 2: Starting and Moving
This is where the technique differs based on the transmission type.
For Automatic Cars
Start: Right foot on the Brake, gear in P (Park), and turn the ignition.
Select: Move the gear lever to D (Drive).
Release: Disengage the handbrake.
Creep: Slowly lift your foot off the brake. The car will "creep" forward.
Accelerate: Gently press the gas pedal to gain speed.
For Manual Cars
Start: Left foot fully on the Clutch, Right foot on the Brake, gear in Neutral, and turn the ignition.
Select: Shift into 1st Gear.
Release: Disengage the handbrake.
The Biting Point: Slowly lift the clutch until the car vibrates slightly (the "tug").
Balance: Release the brake and gently add gas while finishing the clutch release.
๐ Phase 3: Slowing and Stopping
Proper braking prevents "jerking" and keeps the vehicle stable.
Scan: Check your rearview mirror to see how close the car behind you is.
Lift: Take your foot off the accelerator.
Brake: Apply progressive pressure to the brake pedal (start light, increase pressure, then ease off just before stopping).
Clutch (Manual Only): When your speed drops below 15โ20 km/h, press the clutch in fully to prevent the engine from stalling.
Secure: Once stopped, pull the handbrake and shift to Neutral (Manual) or Park (Automatic).
๐ง Theory of Driving: Expert Tips
The "Vision" Rule: Look 10โ15 seconds ahead of where you are, not just at the car directly in front of you. This gives you more time to react.
Smoothness over Speed: A great driver is defined by how little their passengers feel the gear shifts and braking.
Pedal Discipline: In an automatic, your left foot should stay on the "dead pedal" at all times. Never use both feet for the pedals.
