🏺Ancient Greek Funerary Ritual and the Unique Necropolis of Phichvnari
🏛️Ancient Greek funerary ritual was not limited merely to the burial of the deceased — it was a complex and symbolic process expressing the connection between life and death.
⚱️According to ancient Greek beliefs, the soul of a person left unburied or buried without proper rites could not enter the kingdom of Hades (the underworld) and would be condemned to wander eternally.
The ritual consisted of three main stages:
🪦Prothesis — the washing of the deceased, anointing with oils, and the farewell ceremony. At the end of the process, a coin was placed in the mouth of the dead for Charon, the ferryman who would carry the soul across the River Styx or Acheron.
🪦Ekphora — the funeral procession and burial, usually conducted before sunrise or after sunset. Ancient Greeks generally buried the deceased oriented toward the east.
🪦Perideipnon — after the completion of the burial ritual, relatives and close companions returned to the house of the deceased and held a funerary feast, already described by Homer in the Iliad during the funeral of Hector.
⛏️A remarkable material reflection of these traditions can be observed in the ancient necropolis of Phichvnari — a unique archaeological site on the eastern Black Sea coast, where a Greek necropolis has been identified alongside, though separately from, the burials of the local Colchian population.
🏺The archaeological material from Phichvnari clearly demonstrates how closely Colchis was connected to the ancient Greek world. Attic pottery, lekythoi, and objects associated with funerary rituals discovered there indicate not only trade relations, but also cultural coexistence.
🏛️Today, Phichvnari remains one of the most important sources for understanding the rituals, beliefs, and cultural interactions of the ancient world within the territory of Colchis.
