📢 The British Egyptian Centre of AI and Virtual Heritage (BECAIVE) was officially launched at the National Research Institute for Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday 17 August 2026.

Jointly managed by the University of York and NRIAG, the Centre explores the potential of artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies for heritage preservation, conservation, research, interpretation, and public engagement.

🎉 York School of Architecture recently hosted the inaugural ArchiFUTURES PhD Research Conference at the Piazza Building, Campus East!

Organised by a PhD student committee and mentored by Professor Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem, this student-led event brought together doctoral researchers from across Yorkshire, the UK, and internationally.

Hosted by the Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage (CAUGH), 34 papers were presented across key themes:
✔️ Architectural history & urban heritage
✔️ Architectural pedagogy, theory & practice
✔️ Participatory architecture & community engagement
✔️ Environmental sustainability & spatial justice
✔️ Digital design, future architecture & AI

This seminar explores how the destruction and reconstruction of Aleppo’s informal settlements can be understood through the interconnected themes of architecture, displacement, memory, and mental health. It considers how the loss of home, neighbourhood, and familiar spatial environments affects identity, collective memory, and psychosocial wellbeing, and examines how participatory and memory-informed approaches to reconstruction may contribute to resilience, recovery, and community wellbeing. The seminar is organised in collaboration with The Institute of Mental Health Research at York (IMRY).
