⛺️🔥 Y4 Camp Out ⛺️🔥

What an epic night at the annual Y4 Camp Out! We roasted gooey s'mores around the fire, enjoyed games with friends, and sang our hearts out to camp songs!

And, history was officially made last night—we had our first-ever visit from the Tooth Fairy at camp. 🧚✨ Talk about magical!

If you walk past the campsite this morning, it's totally quiet. Do not be fooled... they are definitely not sleeping! The whole crew was up and ready to play at 5:00am, so right now they are chilling out with a movie.

A big thank you to everyone who made this incredible night happen. Early nights all round tonight!

🎶🎻 MUSIC EDUCATION🎻🎶

This week, children in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 enjoyed a brilliant 'Playground Proms' performance by Graffiti Classics the Comedy String Quartet. Challenging the perception that classical music can be “boring”, this interactive concert brought classical masterpieces like Ravel's Bolero and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony to life. It was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to develop their listening skills and discover how a string ensemble works. The highlight was seeing our children apply their own musical talents as they sang the Playground Proms anthem alongside the live quartet!

Following this, our younger children enjoyed a stunning performance from the Junior Choir of St Philomena’s. The choir, visiting from London, offered to visit Westfield as part of their visit to York – and what a treat it was! Our children were mesmerised by their stunning vocals and confident performance. A huge thank you to the choir for reaching out and providing this opportunity.

🏃🏽‍♀️‍➡️ 👟 Westfield Run Club: First Junior Parkrun 👟 🏃🏽‍♀️‍

A huge well done to our Year 3 and 4 Running Club who took part in their first Knavesmire junior parkrun yesterday morning.

Over the last half term, the children have shown incredible commitment by turning up every week for after-school training. Yesterday was the day they finally put all their hard work to the test. Watching the children encourage one another, and then the sheer pride on their faces as they crossed the finish line, was such a joy.

We are so proud of our runners and hope this is just the first of many Parkruns to come for them.

🏆🎉 OPAL PLATINUM AWARD ACHIEVED! 🎉🏆

We are so proud to announce that, following our assessment this week, we have been officially awarded the OPAL Platinum Award.

For the past two years, our school has been on an incredible journey with the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) primary programme. Reaching this milestone is no small feat—only 2% of schools across the country achieve Platinum status.

Since starting our OPAL journey, the transformation in our playtimes has been nothing short of incredible. We’ve seen:

😀 Huge Smiles: a massive boost in children’s overall happiness and wellbeing.

🌳 Creative Play: from mud kitchens, epic den building and tree climbing to scooters, role play, musical instruments, competitive sports and everything in between, our children are more engaged than ever.

🤝 Resilience & Teamwork: Our playground has become a hive of problem-solving and friendship.

🤾‍♂️ Inclusion for All: Playtimes now offer something for every child, regardless of their interests or abilities.

🙋‍♂️ Readiness to Learn: The children are returning to the classroom energised, happy and ready to learn after high-quality, active breaks.

An achievement this big belongs to our whole school community so we are planning a special celebration for our children, families, and staff to come together and share in this success. We’ll keep you posted with more details very soon!

In the meantime, we want to say a massive THANK YOU and congratulations to our incredible staff team. This award is a testament to their vision, hard work and dedication over the last two years. They have embraced the mud, sourced items from the most unlikely of places and approached the changes with complete commitment to improving playtimes for every child.

Let the platinum play continue!

🚶‍♂️🚗ROAD SAFETY TRAINING 🚗🚶‍♂️

On Tuesday, our Year 3 children had Road Safety Training with the team from York Council. They spent the morning learning the fundamentals of staying safe near traffic - learning everything from the "Stop, Look, Listen, Think" sequence to identifying safe crossing spots. We were so proud of how seriously the children took the sessions.

While the children learned a lot on Tuesday, road safety is a skill that grows with practice. We encourage families to:

🚗Keep the conversation going: Regularly discussing road safety during your daily walk to school.

🚦Model the behavior: Remind children why you're choosing a specific crossing spot or why you're waiting a moment longer.

🏡Quiz them: Ask them to "lead" the way and tell you when they think it's safe to cross.

☀️Welcome Back to the Summer Term ☀️

It’s been great to see the children back and hear of their Easter adventures. We’ve hit the ground running, diving headfirst into our new topics, with plenty of hands-on learning through our Immersion Days.

🐷In Early Years, the children have loved beginning their new topic about farm animals. They have shown great excitement in learning about different animals, where they live on the farm and the sounds they make. In the coming weeks, the children will learn about animals and their young and explore where milk and eggs come from.

🐸Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic time beginning their new topic ‘Into the Amazon.’ - looking at the different animals that they could find in the Amazon rainforest and drawing their own Toucans. They shared the story of The Great Kapok tree and learnt a little about Sir David Attenborough.

🏺Take a look at the brilliant masks our Year 3 children created. The children had a great time designing and creating Maya death masks to kick start their new topic: Locating the Maya!

✂️Year 4 are also discovering many fascinating facts about the Maya. They enjoyed creating their masks before showing great teamwork and problem-solving when tackling a maths challenge to build a temple from cubes.

💓Year 5 got straight into learning about ‘Animals vs Humans’ and built their own working models of a beating heart. They used straws, food colouring, water and plastic bottles to represent the atrium, ventricle and body. The children used scientific vocabulary and managed to make the water flow from bottle to bottle - representing the blood flowing from our hearts to our bodies!

🧑‍🎓Year 6 have been out exploring Jorvik Viking Centre and DIG - An Archaeological Adventure in York today - rounding off last term’s topic on Saxon & Viking Settlements. In the week before Easter, the children had an action-packed Maths Engage Week in conjunction with The Place - York. Highlights of the week included sessions with:

Bettys: Exploring how maths is essential to every corner of their business.
University of York: Taking complex puzzles and sharpening our geometry skills by drawing detailed scale drawings during our campus visit.
Nestlé: Deep-diving into packaging and measurement taught us importance of precision for large-scale manufacturing.
Richard Shephard Music Foundation: Compose unique beats using rhythmic fractions in music workshops.

They had an incredible week. Many thanks to the partners who supported the experiences.

☀️ Not bad to say we've only been back three days! And there's plenty more still to look forward to... ☀️

🌟 A Spectacular End to the Spring Term! 🌟

As we head into the Easter break, here’s some of highlights from the past few weeks.

🎶 Musical Connections: This week, our Reception and Year 3 children hosted a truly joyful afternoon of singing as part of an intergenerational event with Musical Connections. Our elderly visitors loved the children’s performances and our children loved sharing their talents.

🎸Rocksteady Concert: What a performance we had from our four Rocksteady Music School bands on Wednesday! We were so impressed with the confidence and progress every child displayed on stage. There are spaces available for next term so, if your child is interested, please see the flier sent home earlier this week.

🔥 History Brought to Life: The Great Fire of London topic is always a favourite. Our Year 1 and 2 children have learnt so much about the events of 1666. After building their own houses to replicate Pudding Lane, they watched (safely) as the fire was started and spread – seeing exactly why it moved so fast across London. They also met two firefighters to learn how fire safety has evolved over the centuries and how to keep themselves safe too.

⛪ The Easter Story: Years 1 and 4 enjoyed an immersive experience at Acomb Baptist Church. Dressed as citizens of Jerusalem, the children acted out the story and were immersed in their learning. Thank you to Acomb Baptist Church for putting on such a creative experience.

🌍 Making a Difference: A couple of weeks ago, a group of children from KS2 had a meeting with MP Rachel Maskell. It was inspiring to see our young environmentalists sharing their passion and concerns about the planet. They certainly didn't hold back! They offered thoughtful insights on the issues most important to them and pitched brilliant ideas for the upcoming conference on the environment.

🐣EYFS Fundraiser: A huge thank you to our Early Years families for your support at yesterday’s Easter event. The children loved sharing their Easter treats and creations with you, and together you helped raise over £660 towards enhancing their Early Years setting.

💃 On the Stage: Our Dance Troupe has continued to own the stage. With fantastic performances in our recent assemblies and at this year’s Dance Festival, they showcased incredible skill and choreography, their performance left the audience gasping - particularly with some of those lifts!

🧩Maths Engage Week: Year 6 had a brilliant week working with different businesses and organisations. Keep an eye open for a post after the break sharing all they’ve been up to.

Wishing all our families and school community a wonderful, restful Easter break. We look forward to seeing the children back on Monday 13th April.
