The English Rooms This group is all about English literature, language and love. Students, parents and enthusiasts of story-telling .

When teaching RUAE, I model outcomes based on examiner expectations, and we explore:

1. Understanding Questions (The "What")
These questions ask you to identify key information from the text and demonstrate that you grasp the writer’s main points.

• Own Words: You must translate a specific point or argument from the passage into your own vocabulary without copying the text.
• Summarising: You are required to condense a section (or the whole passage) into a few main ideas.

2. Analysis Questions (The "How")

These questions require you to explore how the writer uses language and literary techniques to achieve their purpose and influence the reader.

• Word Choice: Identifying powerful, emotive, or figurative vocabulary and explaining its exact connotation and effect.
• Sentence Structure: Identifying punctuation (e.g., colons, lists, short sentences) or sentence patterns and explaining how they emphasize a point.
• Imagery: Identifying metaphors, similes, or personification and breaking down the literal and figurative meanings to explain the author's intent.
• Tone: Identifying the writer's attitude (e.g., humorous, sarcastic, passionate) and providing evidence of how their language creates it.
• Contrast: Identifying opposing ideas placed side-by-side and explaining how the difference highlights a specific point.

3. Evaluation Questions (The "How Well")
These questions ask you to assess the effectiveness of the writer’s choices.

• Link: You must quote from the text and explain how the phrase connects the previous paragraph to the new paragraph.
• Effective Openings / Conclusions: Explaining how successfully a paragraph introduces the main argument or rounds off the passage's central theme.
