I genuinely thought I had to get my baby to sleep in his cot.

I spent SO much time attempting transfers.

Rocking.
Feeding.
Waiting until he was deeply asleep.
Holding my breath as I lowered him down…

Only for him to wake up 20 minutes later. 😩

And because I had a highly sensitive, low sleep needs, very “VELCRO” baby, I eventually realised that trying harder wasn’t the answer.

He wanted closeness.

So we started working WITH that instead of constantly fighting it.

We explored safer bedsharing.
We used contact naps.
I babywore him.
We used movement for naps.
We explored different sleep setups.

And eventually…

we sold the cot. 😂

And honestly? It was such a relief.

Because I finally stopped treating the cot as the destination I had to reach.

Here’s what I wish I’d known sooner:

Your baby doesn’t have to sleep in a cot for you to be doing sleep “right”.

A cot is one option.

It’s not the gold standard.

And if your baby absolutely hates being put down, you don’t necessarily need to spend your days trying to convince them otherwise.

Sometimes the biggest change comes from taking the pressure off and asking:

“Where does my baby sleep best, and how can we make that work safely?”

If you’re currently nap-trapped, babywearing or wondering why your baby seems to have a personal vendetta against their cot…

I see you. 🫶🏼

There are options.

And you don’t have to force your baby into one particular way of sleeping.

My firstborn woke hourly for months.

And honestly? I spent a LOT of that time wondering what we were doing wrong.

I wish I could go back and tell that exhausted version of me a few things…

🌙 Some children simply have lower sleep needs than others.

🌙 Sleep is about 24 hour sleep needs and understanding sleep pressure - not just following age based sleep charts.

🌙 There are alternatives to sleep training if that doesn’t feel right for your family.

🌙 Safe bedsharing was something I wish I’d known about from the beginning, rather than finding myself there through sheer exhaustion.

🌙 And most importantly, frequent waking didn’t mean something was wrong with my baby - or that I was doing something wrong.

He was simply him. My highly sensitive, low sleep needs, VELCRO baby. He was wired differently.

And I didn’t know how much of this could be understood or influenced at the time.

Knowledge is power.

With my second, I was able to use what I’d learned to understand her individual sleep needs, optimise sleep pressure and make changes that supported better sleep.

And she was, overall, a much better sleeper.

Not because I suddenly became a better mum.

But because I understood sleep differently.

That’s what I wish I’d known back then:

You don’t have to choose between just putting up with poor sleep and using an approach that doesn’t feel right for your family.

There is so much in between.

Sometimes understanding your child, their individual sleep needs and what you can influence is the missing piece. 🧩

If you’re currently in the thick of frequent wakes, please know: you haven’t necessarily created a bad habit, and you haven’t necessarily done anything wrong.

You might just need to understand what’s going on a little differently. 🫶🏼

“But Google says my 2 year old should be sleeping 11-14 hours…”

I know. 💜

This is exactly why I wanted to share Billie’s real sleep diary.

Over 7 days, my 2 year old averaged 10 hours of sleep in 24 hours - with no nap. That’s below the range you’ll often find on sleep charts 📊and years ago it would’ve sent me into a complete panic.

I would’ve assumed she was overtired. I would’ve tried an earlier bedtime. I would’ve spent all day chasing more sleep.

Instead, I learnt something much more important: sleep charts show averages, not requirements for every individual child.

Billie is happy, growing well, meeting milestones and thriving. She’s simply a child with genuinely low sleep needs.

This isn’t about saying 10 hours is right for every toddler - it absolutely isn’t. Most children will need more sleep than Billie does. It’s about reassuring the parents whose child consistently sits outside the average and is doing really well.

Sometimes the most helpful question isn’t “How do I make them sleep more?”

It’s “Is my child thriving?” 🫶🏼

Have you ever felt like your child just doesn’t fit the sleep charts? 📊

Parents of children who don’t sleep aren’t just tired 😴

They can be living a completely different version of parenthood.

I remember those months with my firstborn when waking hourly was our normal.

It wasn’t just the broken nights.

It was waking up exhausted, dreading bedtime, cancelling plans, counting down until I could go to bed and wondering constantly:

Why is my baby waking so much?
What am I doing wrong?
When will this get easier?

You can adore your baby and still find this incredibly hard.

You can love being a mum and desperately want more sleep.

Both things can be true. 🫶🏼

I know because I lived it.

And that’s a huge part of why I do what I do now.

Because sometimes you don’t need to hear “enjoy it while it lasts.”

You need someone to say:

“I know. This is really hard. Let’s look at what’s going on and see what we can change.” 🫶🏼

Does your little one ask for a snack…after they’ve already had dinner? 🍽️

If you have a low sleep needs child, bedtime is often naturally a little later. That means there can be a bigger gap between dinner and sleep, so it’s completely normal for them to feel hungry again.

A small, balanced bedtime snack won’t magically make a child sleep through the night, but it may help keep little tummies satisfied and reduce the chance of an early wake that was simply driven by hunger.

My favourite bedtime snack ideas:

🍌 Banana - A source of vitamin B6 and natural carbohydrates that support serotonin and melatonin production.

🥣 Oats - Slow release carbohydrates help provide steady energy and keep little tummies fuller for longer.

🍞 Wholegrain toast + nut butter - A lovely balance of complex carbs, healthy fats, protein and magnesium for lasting fullness. (Use thinly spread nut butter and serve in an age appropriate way.)

🥛 Milk - A comforting bedtime option that provides protein and calcium, especially for toddlers.

🥝 Kiwi - Contains antioxidants and serotonin, with some emerging research suggesting it may support sleep quality.

🍒 Cherries - A natural source of melatonin, although the evidence is modest and mostly in adults.

🥣 Greek yoghurt - High in protein and calcium, making it a satisfying evening snack.

🫐 Blueberries - A nutritious fruit packed with antioxidants and a great addition alongside yoghurt or oats.

Remember: sleep isn’t just about what we feed our children. Their individual sleep needs, sleep pressure and biology will always play a much bigger role than any single food.

Suitable for children established on solids. Always prepare foods in an age appropriate way and supervise eating.

POV: Your baby has FOMO so bad that staying home is simply not an option. 🤪

The four walls of our house just never cut it. 🏠

I used to think I should stay home so my baby would nap better, be less overstimulated, or finally settle. But the reality? For my little Velcro, high energy, FOMO baby…getting out was often easier for both of us.

A walk, the park, popping to the shops, meeting a friend for coffee - it wasn’t about entertaining her. It was about giving her nervous system the sensory input it was craving.

And there’s a sleep bonus too…
☀️ Natural daylight helps regulate your child’s circadian rhythm and supports healthy melatonin production later in the evening.
🏃 Movement and exercise build healthy sleep pressure, making it easier to feel genuinely ready for sleep.
🌿 A change of environment can reduce frustration for babies who are constantly seeking stimulation and connection.

If you’ve been feeling guilty that you’re “never home”, this is your reminder that outside counts too. Sometimes the best thing for sleep isn’t another hour indoors - it’s fresh air, daylight and a change of scenery.

Anyone else raising a tiny CEO of FOMO? 👇

The BER months are officially here…🍂

Which means one of the questions I get asked all the time is:

“What should my baby wear to bed?”

The answer isn’t based on the temperature outside - it’s based on your baby’s room temperature.

This simple guide shows you exactly what layers to use and which TOG sleeping bag is most appropriate for each temperature range, so you can feel more confident at bedtime.

A couple of things to remember:

🍁 The ideal nursery temperature is 16 - 20°C

🍁 Check your baby’s chest or back (not their hands or feet) to see if they’re comfortable

🍁 Every baby is different - if your little one naturally runs cooler, socks can be helpful on nights when their room is 18°C or below, especially during those chilly early morning hours (around 4 - 6am)

💾 Save this post so you’ve always got it to hand throughout autumn and winter.

This is a general guide based on standard TOG sleeping bags. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific sleep bag and practise safe sleep.

Why did we create a Gentle Infant Sleep Workshop?

Because we know how overwhelming infant sleep can feel.

There is SO much advice out there. Wake windows, schedules, sleep training, “overtiredness”, routines…and when your little one doesn’t fit the advice, it can leave you wondering what you’re doing wrong.

We believe you deserve to understand your child’s sleep - not feel pressured to make them fit a chart.

And we believe you deserve a village too.

That’s why I’m so excited to be bringing The Midnight Mouse together with Laura • The Kinship Collective • West Sussex for a relaxed, supportive morning where we can talk honestly about infant sleep, learn what’s actually normal, explore individual sleep needs and look at gentle, responsive ways to support your little one.

No judgement.
No rigid rules.
No pressure to leave your little one to ‘self-settle’

Just evidence-informed sleep education, practical support and a chance to connect with other parents who get it.

For little ones aged 5 months-5 years.

Wednesday 30th September
11:30am-1:30pm
Ferring Country Centre

£25 per person, including the workshop, lunch and a drink.

Come for the sleep support. Stay for the village.
