𝗪𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 - 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗿
It might be Women in STEM Week across Worcestershire, but a career in STEM doesn’t just mean labs and white coats...

When we first met Millie at Young Adult Learning Worcestershire, she wasn’t sure what her next step would be. After leaving a previous learning course, busy classrooms hadn’t suited her and her confidence had taken a knock.

“I failed at other colleges but I decided to come here because it was quieter, felt more comfortable.”

With the right support and a calmer environment, things began to change. Millie rebuilt her confidence, achieved her English qualification and worked towards maths at a pace that suited her.

We then supported her into a work placement at a Worcester mechanics garage - a real turning point. Millie impressed the team so much that her placement turned into a job.

She’s now in sustained employment, close to completing her Level 2 Mechanics Apprenticeship, and even supporting other students coming into the garage on work experience. Working in a garage is hands-on engineering in action - problem solving, diagnostics and technical skill every day.

Millie’s story is a great example of how the right environment and support can help someone find their path - and thrive.

April is and this week our staff have been bringing in some of their paw-some friends!

Mabel the Labradoodle, Coco the Sprocker, Charlie Bunny, Bow the assistance dog and more came into visit our learners.

Having a friendly pet in the workplace or learning environment can help reduce stress, boost morale, and build confidence, with research showing that interaction with animals can support wellbeing, engagement, and even improve learning outcomes.
