What does language and stories mean for young children?

Language develops through relationships. Long before children learn to read, they discover that words help them share ideas, express feelings and make sense of the world around them.

You might notice your child wanting to hear the same story again and again, asking endless questions, creating their own stories or chatting about everything they discover throughout the day.

Dr Morvwen Duncan breaks down the importance of language and stories, exploring how conversations, books and storytelling support children’s communication, thinking and imagination.

Children don’t learn language simply by listening to words. They learn through sharing them. Everyday conversations, answering questions, talking about pictures in books and making up stories together all help build important communication skills.

Reading together isn’t about reaching the final page. It’s about creating moments of connection, conversation and curiosity.

What does relationships and connection mean for young children?

Children grow and develop through relationships. Warm, responsive connections help children feel safe, understood and confident as they explore the world around them.

You might notice that your child runs happily into nursery one day, while on another day they need an extra cuddle before starting their adventure. Every child approaches new experiences differently, and these moments of reconnecting are a normal part of development.

Dr Morvwen Duncan breaks down the importance of relationships and connection, exploring how secure relationships give children the confidence to explore, learn and gradually become more independent.

Feeling safe and becoming independent are not opposites. When children know they have someone they can return to, they feel more confident stepping out and discovering the world around them.

Remember, strong relationships are not built through perfection. They are built through everyday moments of connection, comfort and repair.

What does active play and movement mean for young children?

Young children experience the world with their whole bodies. Before they can explain their ideas with words, they learn through climbing, balancing, carrying, building and exploring what their bodies can do.

You might notice your child climbing everything in sight, creating obstacle courses, balancing along walls or repeating the same physical challenge again and again. These moments are helping them build confidence, solve problems and discover their own abilities.

Dr Morvwen Duncan breaks down the importance of active play and movement, exploring how physical experiences support children’s development, confidence and understanding of the world around them.

Children don’t move simply because they have energy to burn. Movement is one of the ways they learn. Every jump, climb and balancing act helps children develop coordination, resilience and problem-solving skills.

Supporting active play can be as simple as exploring the outdoors, visiting a park or giving children opportunities to move, create and experiment.

What does imagination and creativity mean for young children?

Imagination is much more than fun. Through pretend play, storytelling and creative expression, children experiment with ideas, explore emotions and make sense of the world around them.

You might notice your child turning the sofa into a pirate ship, a cardboard box into a rocket or the kitchen into a café. These moments of imagination give children the chance to explore different ideas, practise relationships and understand their everyday experiences in their own way.

Dr Morvwen Duncan, Founder of The Lotus Psychology Practice breaks down the importance of imagination and creativity, exploring how children use pretend play, stories and creative thinking to learn, communicate and understand the world around them.

Imaginative play isn’t “just playing”. It helps children develop confidence, problem-solving skills and the ability to explore different possibilities.

One of the best ways to encourage creativity is to join in your child’s play, follow their lead and give them the freedom to create their own ideas.

We can’t believe our summer fair was nearly a week ago 🌞

We had such a wonderful day welcoming our new and existing families into our nursery. It was so lovely to see families touring around the nursery, exploring all of our rooms and getting a feel for each of our special spaces from our Baby Room to Toddlers and Preschool.

There was so much fun to be had, with lots of different activities set up, a bouncy castle, delicious food and plenty of smiles all around! And of course, Marvin couldn’t resist joining in with the mini athletics!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made our Summer Fair such a lovely day. It was fantastic to see so many of our families enjoying the nursery together, and we loved welcoming some new faces too.
