Perspektywy 2026 potwierdzają mocną pozycję Politechniki Śląskiej i Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w kraju. ShanghaiRanking GRAS 2025 pokazuje międzynarodową widoczność śląskich uczelni w takich dziedzinach jak metalurgia, sztuczna inteligencja, telekomunikacja, budownictwo i medycyna kliniczna. THE wskazuje kolejne obszary siły, a QS by Subject 2026 potwierdza m.in. dobre wyniki Politechniki Śląskiej w inżynierii mechanicznej i materiałoznawstwie.

Wspólna promocja specjalizacji, silniejsze pokazanie regionalnych klastrów badawczych, współpraca z przemysłem i bardziej spójna narracja o transformacji Śląska mogłyby jeszcze lepiej pokazać światu skalę tego potencjału.

W Helix4HE wspieramy uczelnie w strategii rankingowej, analizie wyników i transformacji instytucjonalnej.

Helix Intelligence Brief 6: What does the West Midlands have to offer as a higher education region?

A great deal: and its strength lies in variety.

The region brings together research-intensive universities, applied education, engineering and advanced manufacturing, business, health, technology, creative industries and deep employer connections.

Rankings provide useful evidence, but they are not the whole story. Complete University Guide 2027 places Warwick 7th nationally and Birmingham 12th. THE 2026 places Birmingham =98th and Warwick =122nd globally; ARWU 2026 places both in the 101–150 band. In Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, Warwick is particularly strong in Mathematics (23rd), Statistics (29th) and Economics (44th), while Birmingham stands out in Business Administration (7th), Dentistry and Oral Sciences (29th), Metallurgical Engineering (44th) and Public Administration (44th). QS World University Rankings 2027 places both jointly 68th globally.

But two universities do not make a region. Aston, Coventry, Birmingham City, Wolverhampton, Keele, Harper Adams, Worcester, Staffordshire and Birmingham Newman add distinctive strengths across applied learning, employer engagement, health, agriculture, teacher education, digital and creative disciplines.

This is the bigger West Midlands story: multiple, complementary forms of excellence. Its opportunity lies in connecting these strengths across universities, industry, cities and communities so the region’s reputation reflects what is already happening here.

Lifelong Learning | Pulse: Design Learning for Adult Lives

Lifelong learning is often discussed as a question of motivation: how do we persuade more adults to return to education?

But OECD evidence points to another question that deserves equal attention:

How well are learning opportunities designed around adult lives?

Participation in adult learning varies significantly across countries and social groups. Time, cost, work commitments and competing responsibilities can all limit participation. At the same time, much adult training remains short term and focused on immediate workplace requirements rather than creating sustained opportunities for progression.

For universities, language centres and training providers, this creates an important design challenge.

Adult learners are often balancing employment, family, caring responsibilities and financial pressures alongside study. Flexibility is therefore not simply an added benefit. It can determine whether participation is possible at all.

A stronger approach to lifelong learning could begin with four tests:

1. Relevance
Does the learning address a genuine personal, professional or community need?

2. Access
Can people participate without having to choose unnecessarily between education, work and family responsibilities?

3. Progression
Does the programme lead somewhere, through further learning, recognition, career development or new opportunities?

4. Application
Are we measuring only whether learners complete, or whether they can actually use what they have learned?

Flexible schedules, modular pathways, recognition of prior learning, accessible delivery and clearer routes between different forms of education can all help make lifelong learning more achievable.

The opportunity is not simply to create more courses.

It is to create better routes into, through and beyond education.

That means designing learning around the realities of adult lives while maintaining quality, ambition and meaningful outcomes.

What is the most important test your organisation applies when designing learning for adults?

We are delighted to have a new base in the North of England.
Helix4HE has partnered with Venus Training, giving us access to office space and meeting rooms at Interchange 1 in central Bradford, just two minutes’ walk from Bradford Interchange station, alongside our registered address in London.

Our founder, Veronica Omeni SFHEA, MCMI, comes from the North West of England, holds postgraduate qualifications from a Scottish university, and lived in Yorkshire for more than ten years.

During that time, she saw first hand the important work universities across the North are doing.

In many cases, their societal impact extends far beyond what is immediately visible: driving regional economies, widening access to higher education, supporting communities, developing talent, and producing research with impact far beyond their own cities.

What many deserve is greater visibility and recognition. And recognition can be built.

Place shapes an institution.

A university in Manchester, Bradford, Middlesbrough, Hull or Aberdeen is shaped by its city, its communities, its history and the economy around it. Effective advice has to begin with that reality rather than applying a London-centric template.

Our work includes:
• Global and national rankings and league tables performance
• Internationalisation
• Pathway programmes and TNE partnerships
• Research visibility
• Business school accreditation preparation, including AACSB, EFMD, EQUIS, AMBA and others
• Employability
• Lifelong learning
• Sustainability
• Institutional strategy
• Curriculum development
• Quality assurance
• Education technology and AI training

Thank you to Venus Training for their generosity and support.

Global Rankings | Pulse: Turning Research Strength into Research Impact
Focus: Strengthening the visibility, reach and recognition of research across global ranking frameworks.

■ The Signal
Across ARWU, THE and QS, research performance, citations and academic reputation carry different weightings, but together they remain central to global institutional standing.
Producing excellent research is therefore only part of the equation. Research must also be discoverable, connected and recognised.

■ The Reality
Universities can hold genuine research strength that is not fully visible beyond their own institutional boundaries.
Research sits across fragmented departmental websites, outdated academic profiles, poorly connected repositories or specialist communications that make sense internally but convey little externally.
Visibility alone will not create research impact or improve a ranking. But weak visibility makes it harder for excellent work and researchers to reach the academic communities that cite, collaborate with and recognise them.

■ The Helix View
Rankings are most useful not as targets in themselves, but as diagnostic lenses on institutional performance.
Improving visibility should never mean manufacturing reputation or chasing indicators. It means giving genuine academic strength the infrastructure to travel: stronger researcher profiles, coherent research narratives, effective repositories, accurate metadata and international collaboration.
At Helix4HE, we analyse performance across global rankings frameworks and build evidence based strategies aligned with institutional priorities.

■ One Action
Audit the journey of your strongest research from publication to discovery to recognition.
Can an academic outside your institution easily identify your leading researchers, research centres and areas of distinctive expertise?

How closely does your institution's global research visibility reflect its actual research strength?

Polskie uczelnie są lepsze, niż pokazują rankingi. I wiemy dlaczego.
W rankingach przedmiotowych polskie uczelnie osiągają znakomite wyniki w muzyce, sztukach scenicznych, rolnictwie i leśnictwie, inżynierii naftowej, bibliotekoznawstwie i zarządzaniu informacją oraz językach nowożytnych. Jednocześnie w rankingach ogólnych żadna polska uczelnia nie wchodzi jeszcze do światowej czołówki.
Dane pokazują dlaczego, i to w obu wiodących rankingach światowych ten sam obraz.
Nawiązaliśmy właśnie współpracę z polską firmą BIURO29 i zyskaliśmy dostęp do 13 przestrzeni do pracy, spotkań i szkoleń.
Każdy system ma swoje zalety, i właśnie dlatego to my chcemy przyjeżdżać do Polski, żeby wspierać polskie uczelnie.

When a business school becomes a platform for national policy and institutional design, its impact extends far beyond teaching and research.

Warwick Business School’s hosting of Nigeria’s National AI Trust Convening in London is a strong example.

The two-day event brought together senior Nigerian government officials, academics, international organisations and industry leaders from organisations including Microsoft, Jaguar Land Rover, Goldman Sachs and UBS. It was one of three convenings being held by Nigeria and the only one held abroad.

It is a strong example of quadruple-helix collaboration: government, academia, industry and civil society working together around a complex national challenge. Warwick’s own reporting describes precisely those four constituencies participating in the process.

For business schools, this is where convening power becomes strategic capability.

Did faculty expertise influence institutional design?
Did new research questions emerge?
Were partnerships formed?
Was knowledge translated into policy or practice?

Its strategic value lies in whether the school can trace the pathway from academic expertise → convening → collaboration → institutional or policy change → measurable impact.

Helix Intelligence Brief 5: AI Discoverability

Signal: Search is evolving beyond traditional keyword retrieval. AI Overviews, AI Mode and emerging search agents increasingly interpret complex questions, identify relevant sources and generate answers supported by evidence across the web.

Why it matters: A university can produce research and still be difficult to discover. If expertise is dispersed across disconnected centre pages, outdated staff profiles, poorly linked repositories and inconsistent descriptions of research strengths, search systems may struggle to connect the institution with questions users are asking.

Discovery is increasingly happening before someone reaches the university website.

Helix view: Research visibility is becoming increasingly semantic.

It is no longer enough to optimise pages around keywords. Universities need a coherent digital evidence architecture in which researchers, centres, projects, publications, expertise and institutional strengths can be found, connected and understood.

Google advises organisations to maintain technical structures, make important content accessible in textual form, use effective internal linking and ensure structured data accurately reflects visible content. There is no special “AI optimisation” markup that guarantees inclusion.

One action: Ask questions that a policymaker, journalist, research partner or AI system might ask:

Which UK universities have expertise in responsible AI in education?

Who is researching sustainable urban mobility?

Which institutions have evidence of impact in refugee education?

Then examine whether your institution’s strongest researchers, projects and evidence surface.

The emerging question for universities is not simply: are we publishing excellent research?

It is also:

Can intelligent search systems understand what we are excellent at?

Helix Insight | The New Hubs of Global Learning

Signal: India enrolled 58,134 international students from 173 countries in 2023–24, up 18.9% from 48,898 in 2019–20. The numbers remain modest relative to the largest global destinations, but the direction of travel is significant.

Why it matters: International student mobility is becoming more diversified. For decades, global recruitment strategies have concentrated heavily on the major English-speaking destinations. Today, tighter migration settings, changing post-study opportunities and rising costs in some established markets are creating space for other destinations to strengthen their position.

India is an important example. Nearly a quarter of its international students come from Nepal, but its student population now spans 173 countries, including significant numbers from the UAE, United States, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

Helix view: Global engagement is becoming less about a simple East-to-West flow and more about an interconnected network of regional and international education hubs. India’s growth should therefore be read not as proof that the traditional destinations are being displaced, but as evidence that students have a broader range of credible choices.

For universities, that changes the partnership landscape. Future-facing global engagement strategies need to identify where student demand, institutional capability and research strength are developing together.

One action: Review your international portfolio. Which emerging education hubs are absent from your recruitment, research and partnership strategy, and should they be?

Is your global strategy still based on yesterday’s patterns of student mobility?

■ The Signal

Nigeria has one of Africa's largest and most diverse university systems. As at 12 August 2026, the National Universities Commission register lists 328 universities: 77 federal, 69 state and 182 private.

That last figure is the story. Private institutions now account for 55% of the entire system, and 15 of them were licensed in 2026 alone. The system is not simply large. It is expanding fastest in the segment that is least visible internationally.

The picture at the top looks different. 24 Nigerian universities feature in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, up from 21 in the two previous editions, and the strongest representation of any country in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Nigeria also has 11 institutions in the inaugural QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa 2026, making it the second most represented country in the table after South Africa.

■ The Reality

Set those numbers side by side and the pattern is clear. 328 institutions. 24 in the THE world table. 11 in the QS regional table. Five in the QS world table. Four in a regional top 20.

■ One Action

Review your institution's research discoverability.

Can international researchers, ranking systems, search engines and increasingly AI systems reliably identify the research your university is producing?
