Moving from DLA to PIP can be stressful for parent carers — who must face a whole new assessment system while worrying their disabled child’s award could be downgraded.
Unlike DLA, Personal Independence Payment is based on a scoring system. To increase your child’s chances of getting the right score, it’s important to know how the DWP interprets certain words in the form.
To help, we’ve put together a little dictionary below explaining some key words — but you’ll find more definitions in our PIP Guide 👉 contact.org.uk/pip-guide
As well as question-by-question guidance and detailed advice on the points system, our guide also has information on how to claim PIP, its effects on other benefits, PIP reviews, and how to challenge decisions.
For definitions of words used in the DLA form, see page 9 of our DLA Guide 👉 contact.org.uk/dla-guide

Here's an important Universal Credit tip: when your disabled child turns 16, they should consider making a credits-only claim for 'new-style' Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
They won't qualify for the benefit itself, but submitting a credits-only claim will force the DWP to carry out a work capability assessment to establish if your child is unfit for work.
By establishing a limited capability for work (LCW) early on, your child will later be able to claim Universal Credit in their own right if they stay in non-advanced education after turning 19 — or if they leave one course and then start another.
Due to a recent change in the law, most disabled students who haven't established LCW *before* starting a course won't qualify for Universal Credit. It's no longer possible to qualify by establishing LCW *during* a course.
That's why it is a good idea to trigger this assessment by making a credits-only claim for new-style ESA when they turn 16. If the DWP agrees that your child has LCW, that decision will also be binding on Universal Credit later on.
And because a credits-only claim won't lead to any actual ESA being paid, it won't impact on Child Benefit, tax credits or any other benefits you get for them as a dependent child.
For more detailed advice on this, visit our page about Universal Credit for disabled students 👉 contact.org.uk/universal-credit-for-young-people

Here's a useful Universal Credit hack: if your disabled child plans on staying in education, they should consider making a credits-only claim for 'new style' Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) when they turn 16.
