I reduce mental health and wellbeing issues caused by a lack of workplace skills, lack of understanding of the workplace or a strong feeling of being stuck either in the wrong career, or not managing to move forward in the right one.

Q: What should you do if you can't afford coaching?

A: Buy a copy of my book, The Career Confidence Toolkit for Women. Packed full of advice on why women in particular might lack confidence in their lives and career and what to do about that. It shares my lived experience and that of the 23 amazing women I interviewed as well as anecdotes from clients. And most importantly of all, every chapter ends with a whole bank of tools you can use to coach yourself and empower yourself to progress forward and be the confident woman you've always dreamed of.

And best yet...it's a lot cheaper than paying for actual coaching and can be purchased from Amazon and other retailers, by either you or your organisation. I can even come into workplaces and deliver workshops based around the book.

So what are your packing secrets? Will you be rocking a minimal wardrobe on your holidays or have you packed everything including the kitchen sink and are walking past the RyanAir staff with a fishing vest and hollowed out neck rest? IYKYK

I’ve been doing a lot of packing lately, as I’ve been lucky enough to go on a few retreats.  I always find the packing bit stressful as I try and pack for ‘future perfect’ me i.e I think I’ll go away and suddenly become some goddess mixed with a model, who actually cares what she looks like.  Rather than just picking up whatever comes to hand, which is my usual de rigueur.

And I often find clients have the same approach when it comes to planning the next steps in their life or career.  There are so often ‘shoulds’; what I should be doing, saying, not doing, how I should show up and what steps I should take.

But what if we stripped it all back and focused just on one core question:

What do you really want?

When we shut out the noise, we can answer this question much better.  I find going on retreats is a brilliant way to quieten the noise and still the mind, so you can make good decisions for you.  I talk about this, lily padding (jumping around jobs quickly), and the highs and lows of female friendship and how motherhood (or not) can impact that, in this month’s newsletter. Link in bio.

What do you do to help shut out the noise and ‘pack light’ so you make good decisions?

And more importantly…how are your actual packing skills? Are you an over-packer or a minimalist?

The heat is intense.
It builds and builds, as an orchestral crescendo.
Biig drums vibrate, like the sound bath I escape to.
Waves of sound and air con crash over me,
Whilst my senses are on fire.
They rise again as we watch history.
Viewing Odyssey I rack my brain, over 5 years of study but never this feeling.
Exhausted, walking into a hot night despite the late hour.
And in another land, far away, mosquittos lie in wait.
They already feasted on us, as we feasted ourselves,
On dish after dish of stunning food,
Whilst our minds feasted too.
On memories, feelings, journals and friendship.
A weekend never to forget,
As we head home, expecting normal life to resume.
But instead I leave it postponed.
Sunny walks to Sonning, BBC interviews,
A painting class that was a dream.
More moments to sit, to reflect in quiet contemplation,
To write what's next, in my story and yours, whilst the heat keeps rising.
This was July.

I've been asked to take part in a discussion on BBC Berkshire radio to talk about people moving about in jobs/careers more often.  We all know the idea of a job for life has long gone, but what does that mean for workers in the market at the moment?  Is moving often a good thing? A career helper or blocker?  How is it viewed by employers?

We'll be talking about this and more (exact date/time TBC due to scheduling challenges).  I know what I think/have experienced with my clients but I'd love to know your thoughts on the topic as well.  Comment below.

Wondering if my network can help...or do you know anyone who can?

I'm looking for a short course/workshop, no more than a day or two at absolute most. Focused on coaching tools...after my recent trip to Barcelona where activities included using cards of various images, it's made me want to review the tools I use and what I could refresh in my toolkit. Suggestions in the comments please...

Taking time for yourself is so important. As busy working professionals it can be very easy for life to take over. I've been working with a client about how to really embed the interesting leadership course she did so it doesn't just become something which was useful for a few days and then gets forgotten about.

So I'm learning from that and putting it into my own practice. I've spent a happy hour in the shade of my garden re-reading all the things I wrote on my recent trip to Barcelona and reflecting on the brilliant tools Marusha | Girls Who Write gifted us for our practice. I'm also excited to get started on that novel thanks to an interesting conversation with ICF Accredited Personal & Business Coach and Mrs K 💖 sparked some new ideas! Watch this space.

Just me here casually working on my next book and latest newsletter on no sleep and 36 degree heat...how are you getting on? Post a picture in the comments!

And if like many of my clients you struggle to deal with unexpected plot twists from heatwaves to redundancies, here are 5 commandments we often work through.

5 Rules for When Life Goes Off-Piste

1) Not everything that ends has failed. Sometimes success is knowing when to let go and make space for what's next.

2)You are allowed a plot twist at any age or in any situation .

3) You don't need a five-year plan to make a good next-step decision.

4)Ask yourself, Am I looking through the windscreen or the rear-view mirror? Learn from the past, absolutely. Live there? Not so much.

5)When life forces change on you, focus on the bit you can influence, not the bit you can't. Heatwaves, redundancies, cancelled plans, unexpected opportunities. You don't always control the twist, but you do get to decide what happens in the next chapter.

I talk about this and more in my latest newsletter...link to sign up in bio.

Stay safe and cool everyone in this heat! 😎
