One thing I've noticed from meeting successful people across education, business and community organisations is this:

Very few of them are successful because they are naturally the most talented.

They're successful because they keep showing up.

They stay consistent.

They keep learning.

They keep improving.

The same is true for children.

Success in English isn't about being the smartest child in the room.

It's about developing strong habits, building confidence and putting in consistent effort over time.

Small steps.

Repeated consistently.

That's where remarkable progress happens.

As we begin thinking about September, that's exactly what I encourage families to focus on.

One thing I always remind parents is that progress isn't just about marks.

It's also about confidence.

It's about engagement.

It's about a child feeling capable.

That's why messages like this mean so much:

"G said it was fun and informative."

Children learn best when they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes and challenge themselves.

The goal isn't simply to improve grades.

The goal is to help children become confident, independent learners who trust their own abilities.

That's where long-term success comes from.

Many parents tell me:

A recent visit brought me back to the Austin Pearce Building at Surrey University.

Standing there was a reminder of just how much can change over time.

Many people know me today as a tutor, examiner and business owner.

What they often don't realise is that my tutoring journey actually began while I was studying law.

Back then, tutoring was simply a way to help students whilst earning alongside my studies.

I never imagined it would grow into a business that would allow me to support hundreds of students and families over the years.

Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful.

Grateful for every family who trusted me.

Every student who worked hard.

Every lesson taught.

And every opportunity to help a child build confidence in their own ability.

Sometimes it's worth pausing to reflect on how far you've come before focusing on how far you still want to go.

This week, that's exactly what I'm doing.

This lovely message arrived in my inbox after a recent session:

"Thank you so much for today's session. A really did enjoy herself."

Parents often come to me focused on grades.

And of course, academic progress is important.

But confidence matters too.

Enjoyment matters too.

Because when children enjoy learning:

• They participate more
• They ask questions
• They challenge themselves
• They become more resilient

Academic success isn't built on knowledge alone.

It's built on confidence, curiosity and capability.

Those are qualities I try to nurture in every session.

If I could recommend just one thing to improve a child's English, it would be reading.

Not because it magically improves grades overnight.

But because reading quietly develops so many skills at once.

📚 Vocabulary
📚 Comprehension
📚 Writing style
📚 General knowledge
📚 Confidence with language

The strongest students I teach aren't necessarily the ones who complete the most worksheets.

They're often the ones who have developed a genuine habit of reading.

That doesn't mean children need to read Dickens for hours every day.

It means finding books they genuinely enjoy and building consistency.

Small amounts done regularly will always beat occasional bursts of motivation.

One of the best pieces of advice I received recently was simple:

"Be more visible."

As business owners, it can be tempting to spend all our time working behind the scenes.

Planning.
Creating.
Perfecting.

But sometimes the most important thing we can do is show up.

That's exactly what I encourage my students to do too.

Put your hand up.

Have a go.

Ask the question.

Try the difficult task.

Confidence doesn't appear overnight.

It grows every time we take a small step outside our comfort zone.

A lesson that's just as valuable for adults as it is for children.

One of my favourite pieces of feedback this week came directly from the students.

"10/10 the comprehension."

"10/10 the vocabulary."

The best lessons aren't just productive.

They're engaging.

Because when students enjoy learning, they become more willing to tackle difficult tasks and challenge themselves.

That's where real progress happens.
